Below is a fundamental report of what’s going on in term of power markets, misconceptions and potential solutions.
Key findings: nuke and hydro (too a lesser extent) had in 2022 their worst year in decades.
Europe have used - a bit - more coal, quite more renewables, but not enough to compensate… so had to rely on gas which went berserk because of Putin.
You can twist the market rules as much as you want, when 100TWh are missing, prices will still go crazy. Marginal molecule dictates the overall price… and this reports kills a lot of stupid ideas floating around.
Now, if you want prices to go back down, pray for the rain, pray for the restart of nuke, push renewables and be energy efficient.
You can change the rules, but you can’t change the game.

Marcel Boiteux has died, aged 101. RIP.
He was not only CEO of EdF during 20 years, but also founding father of electricity economics.
Half the questions that people had about electricity markets during last year's crisis he had answered. 70 years ago.

An integrated power market requires harmonization of balancing market design. The principles, as laid down in EU rules are OK, but not always properly implemented.

Great news 📰
The TSOs of Estonia 🇪🇪, Latvia 🇱🇻 and Lithuania 🇱🇹 have agreed to synchronise their grids with the continental grid by February 2025.
Nearly one year earlier than previously foreseen.

We should let the whole thing go.
But that's probably too late.
So we should turn it into something useful by focusing on small-scale assets.

Remember negative wholesale prices are always a consequence of distortive policies.
Solar power can be turned off at no cost. So why keep it running when you have to pay for producing power?
You're guessing right: to earn yourself subsidy payments.
@PaulGiesbertz1@JoostGreunsven@nduic@LionHirth I wonder what happened that we don’t see capacity allocation applied between bidding zones as ‘the’ market based congestion manangement tool. It will manage (not solve) all structural congestions in the grid but it comes with consequences and other design changes….
