Fascinating that 1 Point Slam bills itself exclusively as “pros vs amateurs” when the “men vs women” axis is often just as fascinating in these head-to-heads.
But highlighting that turns it into a gender referendum, like last month’s “Battle of the Sexes” became.
Starting soon!
The media's decision to wilfully misrepresent Mitch's POV unleashed torrents of homophobic and biphobic abuse back at him and others who are in his corner.
If this remains the status quo, it's hard to see other players following in his footsteps.
And that's bloody depressing.
Mitch didn't take issue with the costumes.
He pointed out that Bailey saying "this is what a grand final loss does to ya" in his caption, belongs to a decades-old homophobic trope where losing or weakness is synonymous with being gay.
But nuance isn't modern media's forte.
This is so brave, particularly right now when LGBTQIA+ voices were largely sidelined in the national conversation over the past few weeks.
Representation matters, and Mitch has paved a path forward for queer folk growing up in AFLM spaces to follow.
Thank you, Mitch. 💕
New at Bounces: An in-depth interview with the woman who broke the silence around Alexander Zverev during the #AusOpen trophy ceremony with five words:
"Australia believes Olya and Brenda"

@BenRothenberg These are the facts.
When Olya shared her story, Zverev sued a journalist.
When the ATP's investigation found 'unsubstantial evidence', Zverev said he was proven innocent.
When Brenda sued, Zverev made a settlement.
When this woman spoke up, Zverev decided to gaslight her.
It's not lost on me that Australia's broadcast fawned over and practically willed Zverev to break his GS final curse with zero mention of his (alleged) domestic abuse.
What a moment of bravery from this woman to bring Olya and Brenda's stories into the light. #AusOpen
Some deeply necessary reporting from @BenRothenberg.
Per his yarn, Zverev said afterwards: "There haven't been [any accusations] for, what, nine months now? Good for her. I think she was the only one in the stadium who believed anything in that moment."

Just as Zverev is about to speak at the trophy ceremony, a woman repeatedly shouts:
“Australia Believes Olya and Brenda! Australia Believes Olya and Brenda!”
Broke through the silence.
