We are witnessing a very sad moment in American history.
The President of the United States is aligning himself with the dictator of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to undermine the independence of Ukraine and its democracy.
Here are my thoughts:
Blumenthal: "What world is he living in? It is not only contrary to the facts and the truth but utterly despicable. A disgusting betrayal of a country that has bled and fought and died for freedom ... the president's surrender is pathetic and weak."
George Monbiot on Ukraine/Putin: “It’s as if he’d come to the UK, he’d occupied Kent, Surrey, Sussex & then somebody else like Donald Trump comes along & says fine guys just live with that. These people who go on about sovereignty will sell anyone down the river”

Ukraine has fought too hard for its freedom, only to have its future dictated by Putin and Trump behind closed doors.
Any peace must guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and security on terms acceptable to Ukrainians, not just to Moscow and Mar-a-Lago.
"Accepting personal responsibility" is not a problem most trauma survivors in recovery have.
Usually we've taken on way too much "responsibility" for way too long, & we have unrealistic beliefs about "responsibility" that's truly ours & which we can appropriately take on.
I think Elon is unhappy that Wikipedia is not for sale. I hope his campaign to defund us results in lots of donations from people who care about the truth. If Elon wanted to help, he'd be encouraging kind and thoughtful intellectual people he agrees with to engage.

NEW: @Europol chief: to 'enforce' democracy, police need encryption backdoors.
Says anonymity "not a fundamental right"
I disagree. Demanding total access to private communications lays the technical groundwork for undermining democracy.

“Here we are in 2024, in the British countryside, with people riding out with a pack of hounds to hopefully, from their perspective, tear a fox to pieces for fun — you couldn’t make it up !”

Nigel Farage is the son of a stock broker.
He went to Dulwich College, a private school. He worked trading commodities, then banking until the early 2000’s.
He was a Conservative from his early school days until 1992.
He prefers wine to beer, and mainly drinks beer for the public image. He enjoys sipping champagne at Lords, and is a member of the MCC.
He banks at Coutts.
He’s a member of the private members club 5 Hertford Street.
Here he is on the front cover of the Daily Telegraph with the gentry and their horses and hounds at the Boxing Day Hunt that he attends each year.
Now tell us he’s not part of the establishment.
Richard Tice in 2018 on George Soros' donation to UK groups:
"He doesn't live here. He doesn't pay taxes here. What right has he got to interfere with our democracy?"
Tice in 2024 ahead of Elon Musk's donation to Reform UK:
"If Mr Musk can legally donate... We'd be delighted."
🧵As a scholar of the systems behind genocidal violence, who's accurately forecasted major events (from 2008 crash to mainstreaming of far-right), I believe the Musk-Trump economic plan is a blueprint for total social, political & economic collapse /1 https://t.co/XaSeNjEVi1
Case in point: there's no way to build a backdoor that only the "good guys" can use.
When the entire technical community says that the EU's ChatControl legislation + similar pose serious cybersecurity threats, we're not exaggerating for effect.
This headline manages to reinforce several pillars of rape culture at once, one being that sexual violence is a private act and coming forward about it publicly is a transgression, another that any attempt to seek justice for sexual violence is a form of violence in itself
“There is not a single man on Earth who believes ‘not all men’.
Because if you really believed it, you would let your homies date your sisters. You don't. Becuase you know.
You would let your daughters go to sleep overs in other men's houses even if those mens wives were not around. You don't. Because you know.
You would have at least three men on call that you could have babysit your daughters the way women have at least three women on call that they can leave their children of either sex with. You don't. Because you know.
You would not give your daughters such tight curfews while giving your boys relatively unlimited freedom. You do.
Because you know.
You wouldn't care what your female relatives wear outside.
You do. Because you know.
You would let your wife host your homies when you're out of town. You don't. Because you know.
Your wives wouldn't feel anxious about giving you daughters. And you would feel equal joy at the arrival of a daughter as you do at the arrival of a son. You don't. You feel terror. Because you know.”
