Yep, I worked on my first political campaign in '67, so I witnessed all these developments in real time. My soul weeps at how successful the Southern Strategy has been. Our nation could have gone in a different direction, but it chose a trajectory that led eventually to Trump

The “architect of the Southern Strategy” was Kevin Phillips. His book, The Emerging Republican Majority (1969), outlined how the Republican Party could realign American politics by appealing to conservative white Southerners. When Wallace was shot in 1972, Lee Atwater, Roger Stone and Pat Buchanan knew the Strategy would reflect Nixon by sweeping Wallace voters. It’s been used by the GOP in every campaign since. Reagan, who was a raging racist, even went so far as to order the release of “A Nation At Risk” to stoke fear about the “diluting” of American education using fake data. Which led to vouchers and groups like Moms for Liberty. Pretty much every thing R’s have pushed for since 1972 is rooted in white supremacy.

In the long sweep of history, no President will be more reviled and hated than @realDonaldTrump. He will be seen as a criminal perversion of the office, a low, vile, and reprehensible traitor to our ideals and the Republic.

His family members will change their names or flee to live abroad. He will become a watchword for malice and incompetence, and he will be loathed by a hundred generations of American. His party will mutate and die.

His enablers will deny their roles in his rise, his supporters will be shunned, his donors will be despised. His name will be a curse. His legacy will be a cautionary tale of destruction and hate.

It’s over, and the sooner the actuarial tables catch up, the better for the world. His grave will reek of ammonia. His hideous legacy deserves nothing more.
