Soccer's popularity in the USA faces a humongous economic hurdle. Consider the revenue across the major American sports leagues:

NFL: ~$23B (more than Europe's big 5 soccer leagues combined)
MLB: ~$12.8B
NBA: ~$12.3B
NHL: ~$7.9B

MLS does roughly $2.2B or about 3% of the total revenue pie. Americans just don't value soccer so without subsidies the sport faces a huge uphill problem to attract the best athletes.
