Every coastal town has a backstory, but Daman’s reads like a movie script.

For decades after it was liberated from Portuguese rule, it became famous for something far less grand: cheap alcohol and cross-border liquor runs.

Sandwiched right next to dry Gujarat and high-tax Maharashtra, it was effectively a regional hub for duty-free spirits.

Back in my younger days, I remember family friends constantly talking about how their car trunks were subjected to meticulous searches by customs officers whenever they drove back across the border, even though I had never actually visited the place myself.

Smuggling enclave? Bootlegger’s haven? Low-tax weekend getaway? Daman wore all those labels at one point or another.

Go back today, though, and you will find a remarkably different story unfolding. I came across this shift recently through several posts on X, a few of which I am sharing here.

The bootlegging reputation is steadily giving way to something far more enduring: restored colonial forts, clean coastal promenades, rich heritage, and massive seaside tourism potential.

It is a subtle but strong reminder that our past reputations do not have to be our permanent destinations.

I was denied International Driving Permit from Mumbai Andheri RTO.

Reason: Address on passport and driving licence does not match. (Both addresses were of the same pincode, but different building names)

Case: The address on my Aadhaar and Driving licence is of my permanent address.

The address on my passport is of a rented apartment (same area, same pincode) as my building was under redevelopment when the passport was renewed.

Passport requires current residence address for police verification or it gets rejected. So I had to use my rented apartment address on it during renewal.

Now driving licence has my permanent address while the passport has previous rented address where I don't reside anymore.

Spoke to RTO officials to help me in this case. They advised that my application won't be processed until I update the address on my passport! (Means more paperwork and additional fees)

So if someone is staying on rent and keeps changing home every 11 months, will they need to keep updating the passport and driving licence address every year to be eligible for International Driving Permit?

I can understand rules are there for every govt application, but it should not be so rigid that bribing remains the only option to get things in our country.

One agent said it could be done for a premium, which I did not want to pay.

Dear @nitin_gadkari sir, honest tax paying citizens deserve better than this in our country.

The International Driving Permit application process need not be so complex.

@RoadsOfMumbai Sir this wrong side driving has become common in the City. If you stand at Saki naka Junction, I'm sure you'll get to see a minimum of 100-200 bikers in an entire day. And this is not only at one junction but in entire city. @MTPHereToHelp will never take action against them.
