Scientific workplaces, with mentorship from one faculty bringing in funding for many trainees, with that faculty having outsized control over that workplace AND the futures of those trainees, is SET UP for abuse.
Abuse, including sexual abuse, is rampant, and we all know it.
I am immensely grateful to @meredithwadman, the journalist who broke the story about Sabatini and NYU Med.
I hope this is a turning point for our entire field: No longer can PIs who bring in grant money and abuse trainees be excused.

I want to very explicitly say that there is absolutely no contribution you can make to science, no number of people you can train, that makes your sexual harassment OK
Every year, most of them give up the dream of being a professor because there are not enough openings. Why is it more a tragedy for someone to “lose” their lab than for any of these, who are committed to making science a more equitable place, to never have the chance?
@nyulangone And while this report is not of a finalized hiring decision, that it apparently has progressed at all does not speak well to @nyulangone‘s perspective on training environments and who is valued in the workplace.
As a female postdoc at @nyulangone(frankly, also just as a member of the scientific community), this is exceptionally disappointing. @nyulangone really telling on themselves that they value neither their trainees (of all genders), nor a healthy & inclusive research environment.
Biologist David Sabatini, who has been forced out of or fired from three leading institutions for sexual misconduct, may now be hired by the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. https://t.co/d6cGjY5MpU
Female scientists at NYU feel utterly betrayed today, myself included. Where does Title IX start and end?
If you’re willing to support the women at NYU, we would appreciate if this were spread far and wide.
