You cannot separate health from education. When a young learner is forced to risk their well-being just to get through a school day, their entire future is put on hold.

Right now, close to 3,000 students across five schools in Jinja and the Busoga region face this exact barrier. A recent assessment showed that while water tanks and taps exist, the water is unsafe. Children, including visually impaired students and those with special needs, are fighting off preventable waterborne illnesses when they should be focusing entirely on their studies.

Today, we hosted the @MWFAlumniUganda at our @reachahand offices to officially launch the #CleanSIPCampaign.

This initiative is focused on delivering a practical, immediate solution: high-capacity ceramic water filtration systems that strip out dangerous pathogens and provide clean, safe drinking water directly to these classrooms.

We have made participating in this movement incredibly simple through the Power of One initiative. A single contribution of UGX 100,000 (~$30) sponsors one filtration unit, immediately securing clean water for 100 learners. Our collective goal leading up to #MandelaDay on July 18th is to mobilise UGX 100 million to distribute 1,000 filters across these schools and their surrounding communities.

This is a direct investment that cuts medical costs for families, reduces the burden on school resources, and keeps children healthy and in class. Let's take collective responsibility and invest in a healthy foundation for the next generation.

When you see an organization expand across Africa, it’s easy to only notice the destination. But sitting with our team this week, my mind keeps drifting back to where it all started. 

We didn’t begin with a massive plan. We started 15 years ago with a single project funded by just $300, running purely on goodwill and the raw energy of young people. 

In our early years, we were driven by sheer ambition. We used creative partnerships, like working with musicians and collaborating with the @Shugaglobal (formerly MTV Staying Alive Foundation), to build a loud, visible youth movement in Uganda. We learned as we went. But we also focused on structure, establishing our Peer Educators Academy which has now trained over 4,000 young leaders. For our communities, this meant building a permanent network of trusted mentors who live these realities every day.

That journey taught me resilience. I grew into an executive alongside the organization, learning that sustainable impact requires constant flexibility. Every lesson was preparation for this exact moment.

Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) is officially transitioning into Reach A Hand Africa (RAHA - @reachahand).

This evolution forces us to upgrade our governance, internal systems, and operational structures to support a continental scale. To map this out, our leadership, board, and regional partners are gathering for a 5-day strategic retreat at the Leesu Skilling Hub in Mbarara. 

Uganda was our proving ground, but the vision was never meant to stay contained. We are building for Africa.

A point that stood out wasn't what role governments can play in developing industry, it is that at times, governments simply need to get out the way.

Private sector development is essential and the leaders in this space drive innovation, job creation and contribute hugely to the treasury where they operate.

To the young African seeking to rise and become a business leader, your time has come and know that you are more relevant to the global economy than you can imagine.

Congolese travellers returning from Livingstone, Zambia, recently spent eight night hours crouched at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport waiting for a flight to Addis Ababa, where they would connect to Kinshasa, a journey of nearly 7,000km and more than 10 hours in the air.

Zambia and the DRC share a border, one traveller noted. A direct flight from Lusaka to Kinshasa would cover the 1,872km distance in under three hours. But no such route exists.
