So chatgpt is replacing some of my searches. I actually think it’s about the same time commitment. GPT needs more typing. Google needs more reading. But when a search needs to be clarified, that’s when chatgpt becomes way better.
Ads work at google today because they are part of the workflow. Ads outside the workflow are banner ads by any other name.
GenAI is just as immediately useful for commercial than non-commercial. Discovering what I want through businesses competing for my dollars is genAI-native.
The most important part of google’s search ad business is I want to click their ads. For certain searches I go to google *looking* for an ad.
An AI powered solution identification product would be a huge value ad. Given that I don’t see genAI as an enemy of their model.
I don’t think google loses out on intent or auctions, as @benthompson initially argued, when it comes to genAI solution identification in lieu of search.
Ben ultimately likes google’s hybrid approach with ads at the top of the page for genAI but I think it won’t work.
So I went in skeptically to the Humane demo (thanks @daringfireball) only I came away gobsmacked. I think it’s brilliant. And I hope some of that thinking makes it’s way into mass consumer products.
Apple’s headset will win and sunset the keyboard and mouse era.
Nobody thought the iPhone would do what it did or the iPad or Watch. Not to mention AirPods or iCloud.
What if the best toolmaker in the history of humanity does what it always does?
I want Apple to have to meet higher expectations, not lower. A non-mobile headset makes no sense when productivity occurs through keyboards and mice. But in a world where productivity occurs through voice and is 1000X more efficient, the headset is a watershed product.

The headset will win. It’ll change computing. It’ll end the mouse and keyboard era. And is the perfect companion to generative AI that needs 1000X less human input than the PC paradigm.
Lots of toy apps being built on latest AI APIs. Who will the winners be?
Those who focus on content creation and consumption.
It’ll play out the way photography played out. Those focused on creation (hipstamatic) will lose to those building for both creation and consumption.
