@WallaceUcsf This may be a longer timeframe than relevant, but microbes experience vastly different hydrostatic pressures when mixed through industrially-sized fermenters. Dissolved CO2 gradients from the bottom to the top of a tank are really dramatic.

@jasminebneal Assuming your new organism has traits worth developing, what you need to make it worth it is TIME. Startup time to get the organism under control, and ongoing increased turn-around time because the tools wont be as efficient as those for model organisms. Think in years.

@jijzarco Generally no, but there are lots of details that influence. Eg, if it is a listed ingredient vs a processing aid. In the US, recombinant chymosin is usually listed as “enzyme” on ingredients. The company selling a product to consumers will likely be a conservative decider.

@academic_exit I started a research role out of a postdoc. I hire now and know that an internship or other industry exposure provides a HUGE advantage to candidates: it demonstrates that the candidate knows what they are getting in to and trains on language and style for an effective job talk.
