Buying fish from a fisher on Lake Bosomtwe. Only wooden planks are allowed as fishing vessels on the lake instead of dugout canoes, as part of traditional fisheries regulations. Normal boats or canoes are, however, allowed for cruises or research.

The shark species captured are listed by the IUCN as either “Endangered”, “Critically Endangered” or “Vulnerable”. Therefore the capture and trade in these species should be closely monitored to prevent the extinction of vulnerable populations.

Ghana has a thriving shark fishery in nearly all the coastal Regions. Our present study characterised shark fishing practices in the 4 coastal Regions. The meat, "kako" is for the local markets and the fins are mainly exported to Asia.
