@walidgellad@DrBrandonMSmith @aem204 I can’t speak to San Diego, but in our region, very few if any children would be managed for new onset diabetes outpatient in private practice. We do an intensive three days of diabetes education in addition to management - it requires a lot of resources.
@walidgellad@DrBrandonMSmith @aem204 Ah! In peds, these kids are usually coming to the tertiary referral center for new onset diabetes because they need to see a specialist. In our region, I am not aware of any community hospitals that would admit new onset type 1 in kids.
@walidgellad@DrBrandonMSmith @aem204 I think it pretty unlikely that outpatient management was transitioned to inpatient- particularly if it was already Randy’s practice to admit these children. Later presentation is certainly a possibility to contribute to the higher proportion with DKA at diagnosis
@aem204 @walidgellad But generally, I think most places do one or the other. So, I wouldn’t say that admissions are necessarily increasing. I have heard this concern about increasing type 1 (and 2) during the pandemic. Many places looking at data! Great question!!
@aem204 @walidgellad It depends entirely on the hospital system - all children with new onset type 1 are admitted at CHP, but some places do outpatient management over a few days.

amazing work by these @PCCMPittsburgh colleagues— they used machine learning (@drjonpelly & @JayRakkar = 👨💻🧠⭐️) and provided evidence of the anecdotal trends we’ve seen in #peds since the start of #COVID19
Amazing talk from Dr. Maria Trent this morning. A painful summary outlining the institutional factors contributing to systemic racism and how pediatricians can contribute to equity and justice
TOMORROW: Join us for Pediatric Grand Rounds with Maria Trent, MD, MPH, FAAP, FSAHM, Bloomberg Professor of American Health, Pediatrics, and Nursing at @JohnsHopkins for a discussion on racism and child health.
