For Sweety Bibi, coming home was supposed to mean the end of a nightmare. But more than a year after she was forcibly pushed across the border with her children, the fear has not left her.

She spent ten terrifying days in an unfamiliar forest, without adequate food or water, walking barefoot through thorns, crossing streams and carrying her children, not knowing whether they would survive or ever find their way back home. She was eventually detained and sent to a jail in Bangladesh before a long legal battle finally paved the way for her return to India.

Today, Sweety is back in her village. But she is still afraid. She rarely steps outside her home, fearing that she may once again be taken away.

When we met her this week, we could see that what she needs is not merely temporary relief. She needs a place she can truly call her own—a small piece of land where she and her children can live without the constant fear of being uprooted again.

33-year-old Mohd Sufiyan and his 12-year-old nephew Abdullah, residents near Badi Kali Mandir Chowk in Lucknow, alleged that they were assaulted by a mob late at night.

Speaking to FOEJ, Abdullah said some youths asked him to get them cigarettes. When he refused, they allegedly asked him to chant “Jai Shri Ram.” After he refused again, one of them allegedly slapped him, following which a crowd gathered. Abdullah alleged that someone from the crowd struck him on the head with an iron bangle, leaving him injured.

He further alleged that around 200–250 people attending a jagran at Badi Kali Mandir followed him to his home and pelted stones at the house and the mosque.

According to his father, Mohd Irfan, the family locked themselves inside the house as the crowd allegedly pelted stones at the house and mosque. They went to the terrace and called for help before the crowd dispersed.

Sufiyan said he was attacked while returning home. “They surrounded me and assaulted me,” he alleged, adding that he suffered a head injury that required eight stitches and that his T-shirt was soaked in blood.

The family alleged that they are the only Muslim household in their locality but have cordial relations with their Hindu neighbours. They also alleged that some outsiders have claimed that the mosque near their house, built in 1920 and managed by their family, stands on temple land.

The family further alleged that they were threatened with eviction and subjected to abuse and harassment when they opposed the claims.

Sufiyan identified Ashish, Vikas, Anshu, Mohit, Anand and Umang among those allegedly involved in the assault.

Police have registered an FIR against Anshu, Vikas, Ashish, Anand and Mohit, along with 200–300 unidentified people. No arrests have been reported so far.

ज्योतिनगर कॉलोनी में करीब 5,000 लोग रहते हैं। स्थानीय लोगों के अनुसार, यहां के 5 सार्वजनिक नल करीब 45 दिनों से सूखे पड़े हैं।

पानी के लिए लोगों को गंगा के पानी पर निर्भर रहना पड़ रहा है या फिर महंगे टैंकरों से पानी खरीदना पड़ रहा है। स्थानीय लोगों का कहना है कि बार-बार शिकायत के बावजूद अब तक स्थायी समाधान नहीं हुआ है।

15 दिसंबर 2019 की बात है।

जामिया और AMU में पुलिस ने जिस बेरहमी से बच्चों को पीटा, जिस तरह उनके साथ ज़्यादती की, उनके ख़िलाफ़ नफ़रत भरी गालियाँ दीं और उन्हें ज़लील किया—वो सबने अपनी आँखों से देखा। उसी दिन शाहीन बाग़ के उस एहतिजाज की बुनियाद पड़ी, जिसने आगे चलकर पूरे मुल्क में एक नई आवाज़ पैदा की।

अगले दिन मैं और शरजील अपने-अपने कॉलेज गए। मक़सद था लोगों को बताना कि शाहीन बाग़ का सिट-इन एहतिजाज क़ायम है और हमें भी अपनी आवाज़ बुलंद करनी है।

मैं उस वक़्त IIT दिल्ली में PhD स्कॉलर था और IITDAA Alumni का Executive Member भी। विंड टनल के पास मैंने लोगों को इकट्ठा किया। देखते ही देखते क़रीब 100 लोग जमा हो गए। तय हुआ कि विंड टनल से SAC तक एक मार्च निकाला जाएगा।

इतने में सिक्योरिटी वाले आ गए।

जब एक सिक्योरिटी गार्ड ने मुझे खींचकर वहाँ से हटाने की कोशिश की, तो मैं वहीं ज़मीन पर बैठ गया।

उसने कहा,
“Sir, आपको इस protest की permission नहीं है।”

ग़ुस्से में मैंने कहा—

“Permission लेकर हम शादियाँ करते हैं, protest नहीं।”

बाद में हमने कैंडल मार्च भी निकाला।

आज भी जब कोई एहतिजाज सिर्फ़ इसलिए रद्द हो जाता है कि उसकी इजाज़त नहीं मिली, तो दिल में एक सवाल उठता है—

आख़िर एहतिजाज के लिए इजाज़त क्यों चाहिए?

बाबरी मस्जिद पर फ़ैसला करते वक़्त क्या उनसे पूछा गया था?

रोज़ मस्जिदें गिराई जाती हैं—क्या उनसे इजाज़त ली जाती है?

मुसलमानों को ज़लील किया जाता है, उन पर ज़ुल्म होता है—क्या उनसे पूछकर किया जाता है?

नहीं।

फिर अपनी आवाज़ उठाने के लिए, अपने हक़ के लिए, ज़ुल्म के ख़िलाफ़ खड़े होने के लिए इजाज़त क्यों चाहिए?

Protest किसी हुकूमत की मेहरबानी नहीं।

अपनी बात कहने का हक़, सवाल पूछने का हक़ और ज़ुल्म के ख़िलाफ़ खड़े होने का हक़—लोकतंत्र की बुनियाद है।

इजाज़त लेकर शादियाँ की जाती हैं।

Protest नहीं।
