@RJHarle @thateddguy @susie_dent It's the sound rather than the letter which determines whether to use “a” or “an”. If you pronounce the “h” in “house”, you'll say “a“; if you don't, then “an” will naturally come out, even if you're conscious of the spelling.

@RJHarle @thateddguy @susie_dent But in writing you won't see “an head” because in standard English the “h” is pronounced, as is the case now with “historic”. If a person pronounces the “h” in “historic” and precedes it with “an”, they're breaking the rule which we all naturally follow.
