National analysis of 224,629 US surgeons across 19 specialties found an 8-year cumulative attrition rate of 9.7%, with the sharpest increases after 2020.
Highest 5-year attrition rates were observed in:
• Oral & maxillofacial surgery: 25.1%
• Obstetrics & gynecology: 23.2%
• Plastic & reconstructive surgery: 19.3%
Mid-career surgeons (5–9 years in practice) were most likely to leave clinical practice. During the study period, the proportion of rural surgeons declined from 10.5% to 8.5%.
Study: 154,000–157,000 active surgeons annually from 2013–2023 using Medicare and NPPES data.
