Incredibly grateful to @UnivSurg for supporting my surgeon-scientist aspirations thru the 2021-22 Resident Research Scholar Award. So many to thank! From my mentor, Dr. Weigel to current/past lab members,to @AButali12 , @ivorylogic, @GoffredoPaolo & so many! 🙏🏾#BlackMenInMedicine
Donald Trump had the racist, bigoted audacity to post an AI-generated video depicting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes.
Most of us already know who Donald Trump is. We already know there are no bounds to how low he’s willing to go. We know that he has no moral compass. We know that he is a disgrace. So while his behavior is not shocking, it is certainly disgusting and disturbing.
But when will it be enough for those who continue to stand beside him? When will Republicans in Congress condemn his behavior? Your silence is complicity — and it is very loud.

Dr. Miguel Gasakure, Residency PD at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), visited UVA this week to kickstart our new Global Health Exchange Program, creating opportunities for residents to train abroad, facilitate collaboration, and expand access to care!🇷🇼
@UVASurgery@allantsung@GasakureM@MedicineUVA This is outstanding, and how it should be done! Learned a lot from Dr. @GasakureM when I was a visiting medical student at CHUK 💕. Hope other institutions can join in on this initiative at some point.
The way to honor King: Don’t just quote #MLK. Work to eradicate racism, poverty, and militarism. That’s on the path to true peace, which, as my father said, “is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”

New on The Academic Surgeon!
In Digging for Gold in the Cornfields, Dr. Hassan Aziz and colleagues share how they built a surgical outcomes research program at the University of Iowa—starting with nothing but curiosity, a faculty mentor, and a few committed trainees.
This post is a must-read for anyone looking to start (or scale) academic research in surgery, especially with limited resources.

We cannot allow Sec. Kennedy or anyone else to undermine faith in science and put the health of our children at risk.

The Supreme Court’s freeze of nearly $800M in NIH grants is devastating - threatening HIV, suicide prevention, women’s health & equity-focused care.
Labs may close. Trials may end. Communities will suffer.
We must protect equity-centered science.
