Forty years after the Chornobyl accident, it is a moment to remember, to reflect and to strengthen our commitment to nuclear safety.
At the “Restoring Nuclear Safety” conference with 🇺🇦 President @ZelenskyyUa, 🇲🇩 President @sandumaiamd and @EBRD’s @OdileRenaud, I stressed that safety can never be taken for granted and recalled how the accident led to global cooperation and a safety culture that defines the nuclear field today.
Chornobyl is not history. It is a living responsibility. The @IAEAorg has been with Chornobyl since 1986 and remains there today, supporting nuclear safety and security now in the shadow of war, including works to repair to the New Safe Confinement.
Somalia’s Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol were co-signed by H.E. @AbdisalamDhaay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and H.E. @rafaelmgrossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
This agreement reinforces Somalia’s commitments under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and strengthens the peaceful use of nuclear applications for socio-economic development, particularly in energy, agriculture, and healthcare including cancer prevention and treatment.
H.E. Ambassador @KhadraDuale , Somalia’s Permanent Representative, received the official copy of the signed Agreement in Geneva.

IAEA Director General @RafaelMGrossi has been named to @TIME’s annual TIME100 list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
This honour recognizes not only his leadership, but also the vital work of the IAEA in strengthening nuclear safety and security, non-proliferation, and advancing peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

Delighted that Somalia’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol have entered into force today, the legal basis for nuclear verification by @IAEAorg.
I thank @MOFASomalia’s Foreign Minister @AbdisalamDhaay for this important step, reaffirming 🇸🇴’s commitment to non-proliferation. This brings us closer to the universalization of the CSA as required by the NPT, key to trust and confidence in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

In a year of many challenges & uncertainty, "the #IAEA went where it was needed most...We never stop working to serve the needs of our world". DG #RafaelGrossi reflects on our objective, impartial & indispensable support to Member States thru diplomacy & technical expertise.
In 2025, the IAEA continued its mission to support peace and development around the world. Watch the highlights of this impactful year and join us as we reach new milestones in 2026.
Today at the @IAEAorg Board of Governors, I reported on our ongoing efforts to uphold nuclear safety, security and safeguards worldwide and to strengthen the benefits of nuclear science and technology.
Our inspectors are back in Iran and have carried out inspections at facilities unaffected by June’s attacks, but more engagement is needed to restore full inspections. We remain in regular contact with Tehran and continue working toward a full return to normal verification activities.
In Ukraine, recent repairs to the Dniprovska and Ferosplavna power lines ended a month of loss of off-site electricity to the ZNPP. Thanks to the constructive engagement of both sides and the IAEA’s continuous presence, the Agency’s essential role in safeguarding nuclear safety was once again clear.
Across our technical cooperation activities, demand for what the Agency can deliver continues to rise, with strong wins for our flagships. #Atoms4Food, ZODIAC, #NUTECPlastics, and #RaysOfHope are responding to urgent needs in food security, health, climate resilience and pollution, and their impact keeps expanding.
Nuclear energy is experiencing a “return to realism”, with a clear upward trajectory. 63 reactors are under construction, about 30 countries are preparing for their first nuclear power plants, and our latest projections show capacity could more than double by 2050. This momentum is evident at #COP30 in Brazil, as it was in the recent #G20 and #G7 meetings.
Fusion is also advancing. In Chengdu, the IAEA brought together governments, researchers and industry at the Fusion Energy Conference and the Ministerial Meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group. My recent visit to @ITERorg confirmed the steady progress of this unique project.
The AI and nuclear nexus is advancing fast. AI is making nuclear systems safer, smarter and more efficient, while data centre growth is driving new interest in SMRs. Next month, the Agency will host the first International Symposium on AI and Nuclear Energy in Vienna.
We continue to report regularly on naval nuclear propulsion programmes in Australia and Brazil, and the work being done.
As always, the IAEA continues focused on delivering results, guided by science and cooperation, for the benefit of all.
Following my recent visit to Kigali, we continue to support Rwanda as it plans the foundations for its first nuclear power plant. We are also working together to expand access to cancer care with #RaysOfHope, including through the establishment of the first radiotherapy centre at Rwanda Military Hospital, and to strengthen food security through crop mutation breeding of cassava with #Atoms4Food.
Welcome to the @IAEAorg, 🇷🇼 Ambassador @urujeniB. I look forward to deepening our cooperation in the years ahead.
Pleased to welcome H.E. Dr. Ussene Hilario Isse, #Mozambique Minister of Health to the #IAEA office in Geneva for an important & timely discussion on expanding access to #CancerCare4All and capacity building through the IAEA's #RaysofHope initiative and Anchor Centres in Africa.
Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed met with Ms. Meena Singelee, Head of the IAEA Liaison Office in Geneva, today. Discussions focused on progress towards IAEA membership and opportunities for strengthened collaboration and technical cooperation.
@iaeaorg
A pleasure to welcome @malawi_geneva H.E. Amb. Bwanali Mussa to the #IAEA Office in #Geneva today. We look forward to strengthening our strong collaboration on #CancerCare4All, food security, and animal health through our flagship initiatives #RaysofHope, #Atoms4Food, and #ZODIAC
Welcomed #Indonesia Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries during #PlasticsTreaty#INC5 at #IAEA office in #Geneva to discuss expanding collaboration on tackling plastic pollution through the #NutecPlastics Initiative and IAEA Marine Environment Laboratories in Monaco.
The @iaeaorg#NutecPlastics Initiative can effectively support the goals of #PlasticsTreaty. We are in Geneva for #INC5.
Through this initiative, #IAEA helps tackle plastic pollution through recycling using radiation tech & marine monitoring using isotopic tracing techniques
Pleased to welcome H.E. Mr. Brian Glover, Amb. & Resident Representative of #Mauritius to #IAEA to our Liaison Office in #Geneva today. Look forward to working closely together to strengthen our collaboration on #RaysofHope, #NUTECPlastics and #Atoms4Food.
