In matters of state governance, a change in government cannot justify a change in infrastructure Policy after so much public money and time have been spent on that infrastructure. Tamil Nadu’s development cannot be sacrificed to the short-sightedness of TVK political philosophy.

The TVK Government’s decision to cancel the Parandur Greenfield Airport is the abandonment of years of technical study, planning, negotiations, land acquisition and public expenditure, without putting forward a single credible alternative.
This decision is driven by political madness, not public interest or rational governance. After years of technical studies, expert evaluation, Central approval, land acquisition, and public expenditure, scrapping the project without a viable alternative is reckless, irrational, and an abdication of responsibility.
I have repeatedly raised the urgent need for Parandur Airport in Parliament and personally pursued the matter with the Hon’ble Union Minister for Civil Aviation. I have consistently highlighted the need for Parandur, its technical feasibility, and Chennai Airport's urgent infrastructure requirements. This is an issue I have pursued for years, both inside and outside Parliament, in the public interest, and it is beyond the TN Government.
Let me tell you that Parandur was not selected casually. The Airports Authority of India examined multiple locations, including Tirupporur, Parandur, Pannur and Padalam. Several alternatives were found unsuitable because of airspace conflicts, obstacles, inadequate contiguous land, existing industrial development and proximity to restricted zones. Parandur and Pannur were shortlisted, and Parandur ultimately emerged as the preferred site because it offered the best combination of land availability, runway geometry, connectivity and long-term expansion potential.
The project began in August 2022, when TIDCO was appointed as the nodal agency. In April 2025, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation granted in-principle approval. A project estimated at approximately ₹ 27,400- ₹ 30,000 crore was ready to move toward implementation.
Approximately 5,320–5,746 acres had been identified, including around 3,750–3,800 acres of private land. More than 1,100 acres had already been transferred, with compensation paid ranging from approximately ₹15 lakh to ₹1.1 crore per acre. A rehabilitation master plan was also prepared for around 1,000 affected families across 13 villages, including compensation, alternate land, and other rehabilitation measures.
And now, after all this, the project is cancelled.
What is the alternative?
Nothing.
No alternative site.
No fresh technical feasibility study.
No timeline.
No Central approval.
No land acquisition plan.
No rehabilitation framework.
No answer as to when Chennai will actually get its second airport.
Chennai’s existing airport is confined to roughly 1,300–1,320 acres. Compare that with approximately 5,100+ acres at Delhi, 5,500 acres at Hyderabad and 4,000 acres at Bengaluru. Chennai’s airport is effectively landlocked by dense urban development, the Adyar, defence land and surrounding infrastructure.
The Government may point to the proposed Fifth Terminal and increased passenger capacity at Meenambakkam. But that does not answer the fundamental problem.
A Fifth Terminal can process more passengers. It cannot create additional land for runways, taxiways, aircraft stands or airside expansion. It cannot remove the physical constraints imposed by the Adyar, defence land, surrounding urbanisation and existing obstacles.
Most importantly, increasing terminal capacity does not automatically mean Chennai can operate more wide-body and larger Code F aircraft movements at scale, particularly for long-haul international operations. Aviation capacity is not determined by terminal floor space alone. You need runways, taxiways, aircraft stands, safety clearances and sufficient airside land.

Extremely sad day for #TamilNadu.

The #ParandurAirport project has been dropped, says the TVK Government.

Years of hard work and intense planning to give #Chennai the dual-runway Greenfield airport it desperately needs have been sacrificed at the altar of politics.

Industry experts understand the stakes.

Investment promotion agencies in neighbouring states will now quietly rejoice, saying: “Tamil Nadu has shot itself in the foot.”

Chennai’s growth and that of Tamil Nadu’s will now face a serious hurdle. We most urgently need a truly world-class international airport capable of handling large aircrafts, with two operational 4,000m+ parallel runways.

I find it extremely difficult to believe that the very officers who worked so hard on this project supported this decision. They know better than most that there is no better alternative option given the environmental and aviation concerns.

The #DMK Government explored every possible option to identify a 5,000+ acre parcel of land around Chennai with the least impact on villages, water bodies, agriculture and existing air traffic. Parandur was ultimately chosen because, after years of technical evaluation, it offered the least overall impact while meeting Chennai’s long-term aviation requirements.

The consequences go far beyond just an airport.

The entire industrial corridor from Poonamallee to Kanchipuram,which accounts for nearly 41% of India’s electronics exports, could have received a massive boost.

Better port connectivity, reliable water infrastructure for industry and direct global air connectivity could have boosted this region and TN into one of the world’s most important manufacturing hubs, creating at least a million new jobs over time.

All of that potential has now been put at risk for what appears to be plain politics.

Our Leader former CM @mkstalin, our LoP @Udhaystalin, the #DMK and I have always maintained that politicising industrial growth comes at a massive cost to the State’s future.

I urge Honourable @CMOTamilnadu @actorvijay to personally speak to senior officers, in private and ask them whether this is truly the right decision.

Do not let politics derail what could be the most important infrastructure project for Tamil Nadu’s future.

If there is genuinely no turning back, then the so-called alternative site must be identified within this year at the latest.

Chennai and Tamil Nadu MUST have a new world-class international airport within the next three years.

Let's hope leaders prefer progress over politics.

Tamil Nadu deserves better.

CREDAI says dropping Parandur is a big setback to Chennai. Says any large land acquisition will face protests. Also adds on that Chennai has slipped and has been losing to neighbouring cities. Sadly Industry body voices aren't heard by the new TN Govt...🙂🙌
