What do we mean when we say "fragmentation"? I identify 5 types of fragmentation when moving from a single chain to multiple chains.

1) Composability Fragmentation

- Single Chain: Apps are open to direct integration with any other app.
- Multi-Chain: Apps on different chains must rely on intermediaries like provers, relayers, or solvers to integrate.

2) Liquidity Fragmentation

- Single Chain: Liquidity is accessible to all apps on the chain.
- Multi-Chain: Liquidity is confined to apps on the same chain.

3) Settlement Fragmentation (Atomicity Fragmentation)

- Single Chain: Transactions touching multiple apps either fully succeed or fail together.
- Multi-Chain: Cross-chain transactions may succeed on one chain but fail on another, leading to inconsistencies.

4) Balance Fragmentation

- Single Chain: Users connect their wallet and see all balances ready for use.
- Multi-Chain: Users must connect to each specific chain to access and use balances on that chain.

5) UX Interaction Fragmentation
- Single Chain: Users can connect their wallet and interact with any app.
- Multi-Chain: Users can only use apps on the specific chain they're connected to.

Anything else?

I believe all fragmentation can and will be solved, with many teams working on these problems.

However, the real challenge is that these solutions may introduce "solution fragmentation" - they might not be interoperable with each other.

On the other hand, a meta-solution that can integrate all specific solutions will ultimately end all fragmentation and bring cohesion.

Before you think standards or pull out that XKCD link - it can't be a standard or a specific solution, it has to be the coordination hub of all solution providers.
