We have a family friend who gave birth to a girl with a very rare defect. Average lifespan for this defect is 10 years and until then she requires 24x7 care from support machines and a live-in nurse. The family is in the emergency room at least once a week from complications.

The thing is they have 4 other kids who are living half-lives because their parents must devote all their free time to this one child. Even things like family vacations are out of the picture because they can't range more than a short drive from the hospital with the specialists.

I get this is an extreme example, and I'm not an absolutist here. What you're saying makes sense in some instances. But I do think some weight and consideration has to be given to the impact such decisions make on the wellbeing of the other children.
