The second law of thermodynamics is, without a doubt, one of the most perfect laws in physics. Any reproducible violation of it, however small, would bring the discoverer great riches as well as a trip to Stockholm.

The Fields Medalist Maryam Mirzakhani died of cancer in 2017, just as she was advancing the study of impossible-seeming objects called hyperbolic surfaces. Last month, two mathematicians built on her unfinished work to prove a sweeping statement about these shapes. Joseph Howlett reports: https://t.co/BnxrkSISqg
This equation is from Noether's theorem, which links symmetries in physics to conservation laws. It shows that every symmetry in a system's Lagrangian leads to a conserved quantity, like energy or momentum.
