My review of Assi( 2026) starring Tapsi Pannu.

We watched the newly released film Assi this week at DLF Promenade, Vasant Kunj. It is about a lawyer (Taapsee Pannu) who investigates and fights a courtroom drama centred on the gang rape of an innocent woman simply walking home alone. The narrative explores themes of legal struggle and societal silence, witnessed through intense courtroom proceedings. It portrays how alcohol, violence, and sexual assault lurk as routine everyday threats, leaving vulnerable people—women and children—at risk. The film shows how the consequences of deviant behaviour could destroy you, me, even children—because most heinous crimes go unpunished as corruption and family commitments override the rule of law.
It depicts just how brazenly police action, forensic reports, and CCTV footage can be manipulated, fudged, and destroyed; and how courtrooms can be reduced to mere play acting through an English-speaking lawyer who intimidates witnesses rather than illuminates the truth. Indeed, that is why rapes—of women just going home, of children—are not aberrations but have become recurring headlines. Such news leaves you and me unaffected, until it happens to one’s own family, friend, or oneself.
The film also shows how even without judicial corruption, justice remains uncertain and hopelessly slow; and how no one understands the difference between court process and court orders.
Despite Tuesday being a concessional ticket day, the hall was almost empty. While social media is full of outrage against crime and the absence of punishment, watching it on a screen seemed of little interest—probably because theatre-goers want the ingredients of Dhurandhar, not societal issues like heinous crimes in everyday life.
I liked the film. Instead of merely changing laws, I wish lawmakers would watch such films to make manipulation of evidence near impossible—because that’s the root cause of the depravity and impunity we see everywhere.

बेटी ने बताया कि उसे कई दिनों तक एक कमरे में बंद रखकर बेरहमी से यातनाएं दी गईं।
उस पर लगातार हिंसा की गई, उसे मानसिक और शारीरिक रूप से तोड़ा गया।

वह बेटी बायोटेक्नोलॉजी की पढ़ाई करने गुरुग्राम आई थी — सपनों के साथ।
लेकिन एक हैवान ने उसकी ज़िंदगी ही छीन ली।

❗ सवाल सिर्फ एक है —
क्या ऐसे दरिंदों को कड़ी से कड़ी सज़ा नहीं मिलनी चाहिए?

इस हैवान अपराधी शिवम को फांसी की सज़ा मिलनी ही चाहिए।
