1: finance, slang : to employ extreme leverage despite limited investing experience, typically while mistaking a favorable market for personal skill

2 : to become increasingly greedy after initial gains, add risk rather than reduce it, and subsequently suffer catastrophic losses when the market moves adversely

He was up 80 percent, doubled his leverage, refused to take profits, and completely leopolded himself.

: the act or process of converting an otherwise survivable investment loss into financial annihilation through excessive leverage and greed

leopolded adjective
: financially obliterated as a consequence of one's own excessive leverage

By the time the margin calls arrived, the portfolio was fully leopolded.

Etymology:
Coined in investor slang for the archetypal progression from inexperienced investor, to leveraged genius in a rising market, to involuntary liquidation.

Thanks to @alojoh, I sold half of my @Tesla position at around $450 per share. At the time, it was a difficult decision, but looking back now, I’m only disappointed that I didn’t sell all. However my average is less than 175/share.

I sat on the syndicate desk of a global investment bank from the dot-com crash through the global financial crisis.

We had to do a lot of media work to promote deals. One day I asked our Global Head of Communications why the media was so gentle with us.

He laughed:
“Because we’re one of their biggest advertisers.”

That explains a lot of the media’s treatment of Elon.

Tesla is so successful, its ad spend is effectively zero, or ~0.01% of the $40 billion global auto advertising market.

No ad dollars = no protection.

No one knows this better than Big Pharma.

They don't make confusing and enigmatic ads to sell you product; they make the ads to control the media.
