Amazing new paper on the 2011 Tohoku M9 quake/tsunami source. They used the deepest-diving submersible in the world to visit the trench and found a 50+ m scarp in the high-slip zone, which directly implies 80-120 m of coseismic shallow fault slip. https://t.co/vk0DYZtV3N

New paper! Japan Trench is a dynamic hadal depositional environment, where large amounts of carbon are buried by earthquake-triggered gravity flows. The buried carbon eventually sinks to the subduction zone.
