During the bombing of Gaza City, a young man named Hamed Ashour found a German Shepherd that had been separated from its owners due to the heavy shelling. Hamed took the dog to his tent and cared for it so devotedly that he even shared his food with it.

International organizations sympathized with his story and asked him to film the tent and the living conditions he and the dog were enduring so he did. The footage moved many, including an Irish organization that was deeply affected and demanded a safe transfer for the dog, claiming that the tent where it lived was unfit for habitation and unsuitable for its environment.

Indeed, the dog was evacuated to Ireland while Hamed was left behind in the same tent deemed unfit even for the dog.

As the Israel team travels to Europe where they will play against Austria, Ireland and Kosovo between 24 September - 6 October, Palestinian families are being displaced and dispossessed, their land stolen, their olive trees uprooted, and their histories erased by settlers with the support of the Israeli military. The beautiful game should bring people together, not rubber-stamp apartheid.

It’s unconscionable that the Israel men’s football team will participate in the UEFA Nations League this autumn despite clear evidence that Israel’s football association continues to support illegal settlements.

Sport should never be used as a public relations spectacle for states committing atrocities. When rules are broken, when occupation, apartheid and genocide are ongoing, we cannot look the other way.

I can hardly describe the joy and happiness of the children today as they watched the movie Coco at @phoenixlibrary1 . They were on cloud nine, and I was just as immersed, feeling completely detached from reality for two hours. A simple initiative was all it took to bring back a sense of life, if only for a few moments, far from the nightmares of destruction and shelling left behind by the Israeli occupation in our minds and the minds of our children.

Honestly, for the first time in my life, I want to thank myself. Seeing those smiles on the children's faces is truly the greatest treasure in life.

Today was my son Emad’s first day of school. It was such a beautiful day. 💔

We faced many difficulties trying to enroll him in this school because so many schools in Gaza have been destroyed during the war. This school is nearly 3 kilometers away from our tent, but the long walk does not matter. What matters most is that my son Emad was so happy today.

Every day, Emad and I will walk 3 kilometers to school and another 3 kilometers back. I will wait for him outside the school until he finishes his classes, and then we will walk back together.

This is me—a father from Gaza who simply wants to see his child learn, receive an education, and achieve his dreams.

And perhaps I am not the only father doing this. Along the way, I saw many parents walking with their children, and others were waiting with me outside the school for their children to finish. 💔
