MAY 24TH- The “PEAK” of Storm Chasing Season, statistically the day where the most tornadoes happen in the United States. One famous Tornado Outbreak that occurred in the last 10 years was back in 2016 where a highly cyclic supercell pumped out more than 12 Tornadoes near Dodge City, #Kansas! Still to this day one of the most highly photogenic tornado machines I’ve ever chased!
Dramatic new footage of the violent Saint Libory, Nebraska tornado as it destroys homes and the search and rescue immediately after the event. Amazingly no fatalities or injuries occurred! #new#tornado@JordanHallWX@SevereStudios@Unitedcajunnavy
TORNADO THREAT PEAKS ON SUNDAY-MONDAY central/southern Great Plains as the trough ejects!
This map shows the shape of the instability axis for Monday PM, which shows a volatile warm sector with 50+ knot low-level jet and big instability. Monday has the look of a classic Great Plains #tornado outbreak.
Sunday will likely go big as well, likely at the nose of the low-level jet, eastern Nebraska into Iowa.
*Severe weather outbreak possible on Day 4/Sun & Day 5/Mon*
The SPC has increased severe weather probabilities to 30% for both Sunday & Monday across parts of the Plains and Upper Midwest.
All modes and hazards, including tornadoes are likely on both days.
ON THIS DATE IN 1970: During the evening hours of May 11, 1970, an extremely violent multiple-vortex tornado struck a large portion of the city of Lubbock TX. It resulted in 26 fatalities and an estimated $250 million in damage (equivalent to $2.07 billion in 2025).
It was in its time the costliest tornado in U.S. history, damaging nearly 9,000 homes. The twister hit a 30-story building in downtown Lubbock, twisting the structure and blowing out all the windows, but leaving it intact.
Check out the rapid motion on the backside of this violent wedge #tornado. I have chased many violent tornadoes over the last 30 years, and this tornado in southern Ms had the look of the strongest
On this date back in 2007, tragedy struck Greensburg, KS when an EF-5 tornado destroyed, and in many cases leveled, about 95 percent of the town of 1,383 people. The twister struck around 9:45 PM, killed 11, injured 63, and caused around $250 million damage. #kswx
