@johnvvariety I know this is a genre departure, but I think pretty famously the bridge in “Single Ladies” by Beyoncé serves one purpose: reminding you of what a killer pop song the rest is by giving you something else to compare it to.
@mungowitz Setting aside anything else about this, I think Joan Jett would’ve been precisely 17 when she heard that song in 1976. I don’t think she should’ve had to update the words every year she played it, I think as an audience we all understand the concept of past tense.
@matterbrown@JoshuaHedley These bands all rule, but I’d also note this is a great list for a certain type of person (of which I am one!). First time you hear, like, “Bostons” by Have Heart can be a real ah-ha moment if it’s your speed. Modern Life is War kinda belongs too, and Ceremony also worth a shout.
@JoshuaHedley If you enjoy 80s Dischord Records-type stuff and are interested in modern hardcore that imo shows that influence, Mil-Spec and Praise have put out some really good stuff in the last few years and Instill out of Chicago has a demo and an EP that I’d fight to the death for.
@ThatEricAlper I think obvious candidates are people with great catalogs that are not wholly in style today who are getting or ripe for the biopic treatment (à la “Walk the Line”). On that basis, gimme Linda Ronstadt as betting favorite and Patsy Cline as a dark horse.
@cantsmokehere In a certain mood I think “King Park” by La Dispute is a decent contender from the last couple of decades. (For recent entries, I also really love “God in Chicago” by Craig Finn but I recognize that’s probably not everyone’s cup of tea.)
@Ehrick_Aybruhms@FranziaMom The last (/only?) time I saw Militarie Gun they played “Do It Faster” I think four times including at least once with everyone trading instruments, so that’s definitely a band that doesn’t take themselves too seriously for a bit.
@lfitzmaurice@FranziaMom I like the record, but more broadly I think a James Taylor lane in pop music stardom is a nice and good thing to exist. (I don’t think he sounds like James Taylor, but I just mean a guy who is playing earnest and contemplative folky music to mass market arena crowds.)
@FranziaMom I admittedly haven’t spent time with most of her catalog, but I can’t stress enough that if I wrote “Mama’s Broken Heart” I’d tell literally everyone within five minutes of meeting them for the rest of my life.
@FranziaMom I hear Floorpunch covers at shows at least. Tbh I’m a bit young for that stuff but I do wanna find where kids are ripping off Righteous Jams in 2026 because that shit I’d extremely cool to me.
@YngTonyJr@ParkerLewes@Nate_Tice Forcible contact to the head/neck area maybe? Idk exactly how the new rules work for the purposes of throwing that flag, but I played Mortal Kombat so I do know a decapitation when I see one.
@Nate_Tice@startkyIeorton I gotta say this a making me desperately want @dpbrugler to tell me the best recent NFL guy who ran an UC T formation in high school.
@bufbills1@zimwhodey Yeah I’m not a Bengals or Bills fan and don’t have a dog in this fight, but let’s not drag Obviously Cool Football Player Matt Milano into this.
@robertmays The Ringer’s fantasy podcast joked earlier this week about Aaron Donald doing this in LA, and since I heard the idea I’ve thought about it for approximately 10 min out of every waking hour. For entertainment’s sake, the people demand every stud come back for one last ride.
@UTCoachSMiller @JakeElrod44 I mean…I feel like they’re both good? As a Bears fan, I feel like it’s kind of funny to see sniping between fans of two of the most “happy to be here” #3 seeds that anyone ever did see. Colts are definitely playing better, but cmon, both cities gotta be counting our blessings rn
@guy_tweeter_666@FranziaMom I’m just some idiot with a Twitter, but I came to Lifter Puller through the “Soft Rock” compilation, and I gotta say that meeting a band by way of the first two verses of “Secret Santa Cruz” goes crazy.
