#Barbuda’s soil survived Hurricane Irma because of the strength of the coral reefs and wetlands. Her people likewise survived the storm, but the powerful forces of economic “progress” may wipe out a homeland, a culture—an identity—once and for all. Thanks @NatGeo@TheOpEdProject
"Barbuda is not just land. It is a Black diasporic identity. It is 1,500 lives that represent a freedom tradition, a legacy worth fighting for and preserving" https://t.co/KogJHKZE4W
@ajc Love this work being highlighted, @CVivlamoreAJC. “I wanted to take a route that was different, that was really, really thoughtful and careful about how I approach people..” @MalcolmBrogdon7
@MalcolmBrogdon7 Thank you for sharing, @MalcolmBrogdon7 "Unless there is international attention to quickly unify and support the rights of the Barbudan people, this independent, culturally distinct community will be destroyed." #Barbuda
@ICSF1 "The proposed development would deal a mortal blow to Barbuda's fisheries, the impacts on Barbuda would be...severe [and] destroy the most important mangroves, seagrass, coral reefs and fisheries of an entire island of fisherfolk" Thomas J. Goreau. @SREnvironment@RamsarConv

@smsstockalerter@breakfastclubam@cthagod Ok, cousin! What a history and legacy you have. South Carolina and Barbuda. Here’s a form you can fill out and share as a Barbudan and/or ally:

@DAdamsSimmons@NatGeo Thank YOU. Although Barbuda’s history as a Caribbean island is unique, communal land rights and challenges to hold onto that communal ownership are seen beyond the island. Having a space to share the story of the island is truly appreciated.
@exetertowncrier @dabeard@danicacoto@NatGeo Thank you. Naomi’s article was hyperlinked in the mention of the current lawsuits that “question the legitimacy of recent changes to laws in order to benefit developers such as DeJoria’s PLH, Robert DeNiro’s Paradise Found and Discovery Land Company…”
@Tuchto did the research that led him to not only share a significant part of history through his writing, but to share the tremendous work of his great-great-great grandfather J.B. Stradford in this @NatGeo article.
In my research I recognized my great-great-great-grandfather's name J.B. Stradford. I learned that not only did he own the most luxurious Black-owned hotel in America, but he was one of the wealthiest men in the country at the time as well. https://t.co/yUHwjDZYbI
Journalist @Tuchto reports on #TulsaRaceMassacre for @NatGeo with a moving story on his family’s legacy. He’s doing the work to make his ancestors proud.
