I believe we are closer to a new global conflict than at any point in recent history but not for the reasons many assume.

The recent degradation of Russian supply lines and Ukraine’s increasingly sophisticated military capabilities suggest the coming months may be decisive in determining the outcome of the war in Ukraine. If Russia’s position continues to weaken, one of two outcomes becomes more likely: either a more unpredictable and erratic Russia emerges, or China moves into the next phase of its long-term strategic ambitions.

China is unlikely to intervene militarily on Russia’s behalf. Instead, Beijing will likely seek to capitalize on a weakened Russia, expanding its influence and advancing its own geopolitical interests while Moscow becomes increasingly dependent on Chinese economic and political support.

At the same time, Iran appears determined to maintain its regional influence and preserve the current regime until global attention inevitably shifts toward the Indo-Pacific. As the strategic focus of the United States evolves, Tehran understands its window to project power may narrow.

Israel should be afforded every opportunity to defend itself and neutralize the radical elements within Iran’s military and security apparatus that continue to destabilize the region. The Iranian people have a rich history and culture that extends far beyond the current regime, and many hope for a future in which they can determine their own path free from extremism and repression.

The next major geopolitical contest may not be centered on Eastern Europe or the Middle East alone, but on how the world’s powers respond to the shifting balance of influence between a weakened Russia, an ambitious China, and an increasingly unstable Iran.
