Psychology is much closer to engineering than science. It builds provisional models to predict behavior and guide interventions. The DSM is one of those models, and an antiquated one.

The replication crisis exposed psychology’s weak measurements, underpowered studies, publication bias, p-hacking, and inflated effects. The 2015 Reproducibility Project replicated only 36% of the findings it tested. That level of methodological instability should have killed categorical confidence.

DSM diagnoses are committee-defined symptom clusters with negotiated cutoffs. Major depression alone has 227 possible symptom combinations. The same label can describe radically different people, while one person can qualify for several supposedly distinct disorders.

Cluster personality diagnoses derived from self-report are especially weak. The answers depend on mood, memory, insight, self-image, defensiveness, culture, incentives, and interpretation. Converting those answers into a fixed claim about personality compounds every source of error and bias in the process.

Good psychologists use diagnosis as a rough administrative tool. Their real work involves dimensions, development, context, function, longitudinal behavior, multiple sources of evidence, and treatment response.

Psychology improves when it works like engineering: measure, predict, intervene, test, revise.

A diagnosis is compressed information with a billing code. Treat it accordingly.

We have a couple here in Mexico, but just to name a few.

The surroundings of Popocatépetl Volcano, with objects coming in and out of the crater, are recorded 24/7. Another is the Zone of Silence, with unusual electromagnetic anomalies throughout the area and multiple UFO sightings over the decades.

In Baja, I've interviewed fishermen close to where I live who are usually close to Guadalupe Island and see objects coming in and out of a certain area all the time. There is another confirmed electromagnetic anomaly there, well documented.

The Mount of Tepozteco at the known Magic town of Tepoztlán, in the state of Morelos. The pyramid in this photo is at the very top of the mountain. Also with multiple instances of high-strangeness activity in the area. And that is just a few in my country.
