PhD student @UniExeCEC studying movement and habitat use of overwintering shorebirds. Trainee ringer.
MSc Marine vert ecology and conservation @ExeterMarine
A mad final week of #wader gps tagging with @UniExeCEC and @Fingalcoco - 75 tags deployed at 3 sites on curlew, redshank, oyc and black-tailed godwit. Phenomenal effort from the whole team braving the snow and ice with big smiles from start to finish. Bunch of heroes! ☃️🥶🫡

After >20 years of tracking, our ringed black-tailed godwits have revealed that the autumn and winter sites used by juveniles are (nearly always) the ones they will use throughout their lives.
New @AnimalEcology paper (https://t.co/gAM3TJDqrK) and
#wadertales blog:
One of our Dublin juvs from last season has ditched Ireland in favour of Devon - spotted here one month after capture in Oct 2022, and back again this winter. Thanks @ironfists67 for posting your sighting!

Redshank at South Huish marsh, South Devon. 17/02/24. I've searched the internet trying to find information and failed. I would be interested to know where the bird was ringed if anyone has any ideas.
@ironfists67 Thanks Richard - it is Irish, ringed as a juvenile in October 2022 in Fingal, north Co. Dublin and re-sighted at South Huish for the first time in November 22.
Presenting my first ever poster at #EOU2023 - some early analysis on links between winter range urbanisation and migratory behaviour in oystercatchers 🏙 @StuBearhop @xav
Taking a step towards better protection of nature at North Bull Island, Dub. A refuge to thousands of wintering waterbirds, nesting birds, unique plants, seals, snails, amphibians etc. Certainly worth protecting! Tell @DubCityCouncil your thoughts on it. https://t.co/6yzLbyQEvG
@ljohnsbirding1@ornitela @StuBearhop @EcologicalKrc @XavHarrison @Fingalcoco All of them have gps tags, and most also have blue colour rings and white flag with black three-letter code (sorry not the clearest picture!)
Seeing a great range of migration destinations in this season's @ornitela tagged oystercatchers. All but one have now left our #Dublin winter study sites and will be getting ready to breed 🐣
@StuBearhop @EcologicalKrc @XavHarrison @Fingalcoco
Much less picturesque #fieldwork this time around, habitat quality #sampling in each of our selected protected estuaries 🌊 Though sunshine and above 0 temperatures are an absolute treat ☀️ @mindtheTrapp @ExeterMarine
Unrealistically proud of you guys for smashing out the last couple days of fieldwork and getting all the tags deployed for all the different species and areas being monitored @Sharon75569682@mindtheTrapp@josiethebirder ❄️💙
The aim is to investigate the birds' winter use of terrestrial and urban habitats outside the boundaries of Protected Areas in north Co. Dublin and the Dublin Bay #Biosphere.🐥
All catching and tagging undertaken with the correct licenses.

The look of absolute love 🧡 A very successful day for our oyster catcher #ringing and #tagging mission! Hopefully tonight mist netting at the same location will bring us some Godwit & Redshank luck 🍀 @mindtheTrapp @ExeterMarine
Another unreal day tagging and ringing Curlews, this time at our second site of Porthmarnock 🇮🇪 Subzero temps make the catches all the better ❄️ @ExeterMarine @mindtheTrapp#MPA#research
