Wounded and expelled from the University of Rwanda after a night of violence against Tutsi students in 1973, Ezéchias Rwabuhihi went into exile in Burundi.
He completed his medical studies in Senegal, where he spent fourteen years before moving to Switzerland and Cameroon. His work gave him the opportunity to travel to about ten different countries, including Burundi, Canada, Guinea, Czechoslovakia, Burkina Faso, and Switzerland.
With his refugee travel document, he endured the humiliations of consulates, the suspicions at airports, and the frequent, cutting question: “What are you doing here?” Though often heavy with gravity, these stories are sometimes lightened by humor, revealing the author’s struggle to live with dignity.
Supported by meaningful human encounters in every country he visited, the writer held on to a secret hope of returning home. Sadly, that hope would remain unfulfilled due to the genocide perpetrated against the Tutsis in Rwanda. A retired physician, former Minister of Health, and former member of the Rwandan Parliament, Ezéchias Rwabuhihi studied medicine in Rwanda, Burundi, Senegal, and Switzerland.
At the University of Dakar, a professor humiliated him in front of his peers, telling him that medicine was not meant for novelists. This incident only strengthened his desire to connect his passion for medicine and writing. The author ultimately waited until retirement to bring his dream to life writing about his life in exile and the troubled history of his country.
Through his writings, he seeks to honor the memory of his maternal grandfather, a gifted storyteller of travel tales.

From Pain to Possibility: Rwanda’s First Rheumatologist Ushers in a New Era of Hope
At King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, a quiet revolution is taking place—one that brings relief to lives long marked by pain, misunderstanding, and silence.
For years, people suffering from rheumatological diseases in Rwanda were trapped in a cycle of misdiagnosis, lack of access, and costly treatment—often navigating the system without ever finding the help they needed.
But that is beginning to change.
Dr. Janvier Murayire, Rwanda’s first and only rheumatologist, is not only bringing specialized care to patients who had nowhere else to turn—he’s also leading a national shift in how the country views and treats chronic joint and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). @kfaisalhospital@RwandaHealth
