@lisa_jeffery1@SusanGodsland They learnt with letters and sounds but Bug Club is now being used in the school. They can’t blend or segment at all and struggle to hear the sounds even when I really segment the words for them. They tend to be able to hear the first sound in words plus sh and ch.
Any recommendations for teaching a child to read who can’t access phonics? They’re Year 3 and still struggle with the most basic tricky words. We’re making some progress with repetitive sight reading but any ideas would be greatly appreciated 📖👩🏼🏫
It's important to spend time creating a decent reading environment in a classroom but it's infinitely more important to spend time reading the books that feature in it. Being able to talk about them with passion is what will get the kids reading them, not the fairy lights.
Just observed a teacher who responded to a student giving the wrong answer by saying, “I’m really glad you made that mistake because it allowed us to see that...” Felt like such a simple and powerful way to build a culture of engagement/ risk-taking in the class.
I GOT THE JOB 😱🥳 I’m officially going to start work as a Teaching Assistant at a lovely primary school 🎉 So excited to start - Miss Pickering here we come 🤪👩🏼🏫
My class were very excited when they each took a treasure hunt bag home on Friday. I’m looking forward to seeing their collections of Autumn loveliness!
My class have been writing shape poems about blood as part of our topic Healthy Me, covering the circulatory system. Many did drops and hearts as their shapes but I love this child’s idea for theirs
I introduced relative clauses to the class for the first time today & used an old favourite method. It really is a simple & effective way to get children to understand through scaffold how to use them in their writing. I gave them a few sentence to add to and then make their own.
When my class come into school they draw a circle to show they are here. We then discuss this in terms of a part part model and our class as a whole. I also write it as a fraction. Drip feeding maths whenever I can!
For all NQTs - this is my favourite video and I watch it every year before the first term starts. I know this year is different but enjoy it! You’ll all be great 😀
