It’s a special day today! What’s the big dill you ask? 🥒 November 14th is National Pickle Day & my love for @ClaussenPickles is endless. Where do you fall on the pickle scale?
this approach!💡
- keeps track of student participation/progress with less “grading”
- it’s reflection in itself
- easy to modify daily; can add extension, form. assess., or more reflection q’s if needed
I know everyone always says, "Just stop grading everything!" but I feel like people don't often explain what that could look like. Here's my favorite approach.
Say students do 2 or 3 things that demonstrate a specific skill/concept.
I provide students with a rubric, ...

Watching Ss Tch @misstrpstr change her (SC)^2 lesson for all three hrs was incredible today. 1st-Directions given verbally, Ss solved on Tch time. 4th-Directions written in board, Tch gave suggested time. 6th-Directions in screen, Ss at own pace, answers at tables. @ProfJonh
Watched Ss Tch @misstrpstr lesson go from OK to amazing today! @GVSUmath should be proud! Ss went from sitting & listening & talking in teams to becoming experts on one problem & presenting to class. Each hr was better & better! #miched#mschat#flipclasschat@ProfJonh
Using sentence starts to help Ss sort through what is & isn’t a function. Did Google Slides sort yesterday, using images as “cards” to talk about & create sentences justifying functions or now. #miched#mschat#iteachmath#mtbos@misstrpstr Thanks @aquick22 for the idea!
Anyone hosting a Ss Tch? If so, it’s super important to give them their own space. They have to learn how to be organized, keep track of things, etc. for themselves! We are excited to welcome @misstrpstr from @GVSUmath into our classroom in Monday! #mschat#miched#mtbos
Our brains believe what we tell them, so how can we get our students brains to believe they are capable? By telling them! #edi331#MTBos

One thing that struck me from #TTG chapter 3 & 4 is the lack of interruptions in a Japanese classroom. The US is very quick to interrupt the whole school for a small non-urgent announcement. I never thought about how disruptive this can be to learning. #edi331
For my week 2 #edi331 choice workshop, I invested time in looking at ways teachers create a classroom environment that boosts student confidence level when they begin to struggle. The outcome is worth the struggle! #postiveaffirmations
Teaching mathematics is much more than just teaching the "what?" It is teaching the "why?" and in doing so we teach important 21st century skills that apply to life outside the classroom. The third workshop in #edi331 covers how this is incorporated into math education.
The community aspect of a classroom has always been one of the things I am most excited to incorporate, so learning about what other key aspects compliment effective teaching with this in the first workshop of #edi331 was compelling.
