Received an email this morning
It feels like I’m drifting out of sync with how society now functions.
Financially, I’ve made conscious choices. I don’t own a car or bike because I don't need them, and I lead a simple lifestyle.
Yet, I’ve built over ₹ 50 lakhs in savings and investments across mutual funds, stocks, FDs, and bank accounts.
I spend on travel, experiences, and quality time, but I don’t feel the urge to broadcast it.
I’ve been to most of the best cafés and breweries in Bangalore, but I’ve never felt the need to post about them.
I can buy 50+ iPhones right now, but I own a simple 30k Samsung device, because i feel it's not worth the investment.
What triggers me sometimes is seeing how exaggerated and curated social media has become.
Cringe content goes viral, people get brand deals for portraying a life that often isn’t even real, and suddenly it feels like the loudest people are being rewarded the most not necessarily the most grounded ones.
I know I could build a social presence if I wanted to, but I can’t fake things for attention.
Most of what goes viral today feels manufactured, and that doesn’t sit right with me.
I believe in living privately, keeping a small circle, doing good quietly, and letting karma take care of the rest.
I tip generously, I try to be kind, I live ethically but I don’t announce it.
Yet on platforms like LinkedIn, someone doing the same thing writes two emotional paragraphs about it and gets massive appreciation and somewhere inside, you start wondering if you’re being too mature… or too invisible.
So I’m confused, Is my perspective outdated? Am I missing something?
Here was my exact reply
Contentment is a difficult concept.
It has two parts to it.
One is knowing that you have enough.
You seem to have reached there.
You seem frugal, at peace with what you have, the choices you make around money, life.
It seems balanced, from the way you described it.
The other side of contentment is equally important but a lot harder.
Which is not caring about what others have.
Not just materially.
Around everything.
Love, fame, respect, purpose, money.
Everything.
I don’t think you have reached this stage yet.
The fact that you are still triggered by people’s sharing something that gets visibility when in your opinion they aren’t worthy - is proof of that.
Ask yourself: Why does it matter?
When you know you don’t want to play that game, how does it matter what they achieve by playing it?
The comparison will be
You are playing cricket but you are triggered by someone scoring goals while playing football!
Sounds stupid?
That’s because it is.
And so is what you are saying, the way you say it.
As I said, this part of contentment is the hardest to arrive at.
But once you do, which I am sure you will sooner than later, you would have truly arrived.
All the best!
