In those times, pay phones were everywhere. Prepaid phone cards made it ‘easy’ to return pages. And the expectation was 10-15 mins to return a call.

The ultimate life destroyer was the fax machine. We went from a standard of dropping it in the mailbox by the end of the day to faxing the information immediately.

It’s a matchstick puzzle: rearrange the figure “83” into the smallest possible number by moving exactly two matchsticks.
The digits are formed the usual way (8 uses 7 sticks; 3 uses 5).
Solution: –95
• Move the lower-left vertical stick of the 8 to the far left and lay it horizontally. This turns the 8 into a 9 and creates the minus sign.
• Move the upper-right vertical stick of the 3 across to the upper-left position. This turns the 3 into a 5.
You now have –95.
This is a clean, standard pair of digits plus a minus sign, uses exactly two moves, and produces a much smaller value than the original 83 (or other two-digit positives you can form such as 08/09, 35, 53, 58, etc.). Negative numbers are valid and are smaller than any positive result.
