عندما كتبتُ قبل 20 عاماً عن إن نتائج تقاطع المعلومات تؤدي إلى احتمال تورط المخابرات الأمريكية والسعودية في اغتيال الرئيس الشهيد رفيق الحريري، قامت وقتها قيامة أتباع الرياض في لبنان. ربما لو قيل هذا الكلام اليوم لكان أكثر قبولاً وموضوعية.

بعيداً عن العواطف، كان عام 2003 عاماً مفصلياً؛ إذ اتخذت السعودية قراراً بفك الارتباط بسوريا بعد رفض الرئيس الأسد إملاءات وزير الخارجية الأمريكي "كولن باول" إبان غزو العراق.

ولأن رفيق الحريري كان ضابط الإيقاع وجسر التواصل الأساسي بين دمشق والرياض، أُخرج من السلطة بتوافق سوري-سعودي بعدما فقد هذا الدور المحوري، وربما بشكل تلقائي.

بعد خروجه، سعى الحريري لبناء تفاهمٍ متين مع حزب الله لقيادة مرحلة ما بعد الخروج السوري الذي حُسم خارجياً. وكان هذا التحالف تحديداً هو الكابوس الأكبر لواشنطن والرياض، في وقتٍ اتُّخذ فيه القرار الدولي بالتخلص الفوري من قوى المقاومة. فكان القرار بتحييد الحريري لقطع الطريق على أي توازن لا تريده أمريكا.

أما خلفية الاتهام، فتمثلها أسئلة كبرى تحاشتها لجنة التحقيق الدولية، وكلما اقترب محقق من إجابتها أُقيل من منصبه:

لماذا رفضت السعودية الحسم بشأن وجود سليم عياش في الحج لحظة الاغتيال؟

لماذا امتنعت أمريكا عن تقديم صور الأقمار الصناعية وصور طائرة "الأواكس" التي كانت تُحلق فوق لبنان لحظة التفجير؟

لماذا حَجبت إسرائيل الصور الجوية وهي التي كانت طائراتها تمسح السماء فوق العاصمة؟

لماذا غاب وسام الحسن –المعروف ولاءه– عن الموكب في ذلك اليوم تحديداً؟

تلك أسئلة بلا إجابات، والأهم أن أجهزة مخابرات العالم عجزت عن إثبات التهمة على حزب الله واكتفت بسيناريو الاتصالات الناقص.

بالنسبة لي، فإن نفس اختيار السعودية لشخصية مثل نواف سلام رئيساً للحكومة اللبنانية، يجعل هذا السيناريو مقبولا.

Iran is not fighting this war only for Iran.

Understand that first. Absorb it. Because until you understand it, nothing else about this conflict makes sense.

Iran is fighting for the right of any nation on earth to exist outside the permission structure of Washington and Tel Aviv.

It is fighting for the principle that sovereignty is not something granted by empire, it is something inherent. And if it must be defended with blood, then blood is what gets spent.

Every country that has been sanctioned into poverty for daring to disagree.

Every government that has been coup'd out of existence for nationalizing its own resources.

Every leader who has been assassinated by a drone because he refused to make himself useful to someone else's agenda.

Every people told that their choices are submission or destruction.

Iran is fighting for all of them.

You don't have to like the Iranian government to understand what's at stake.

You don't have to agree with every policy, every ideology, every internal decision.

That's not the point.

The point is that a country of 90 million people has looked at the most powerful military and financial empire in human history, and said: no.

Said it for forty-seven years.

Said it under sanctions that would have broken most nations.

Said it while being threatened with annihilation on a weekly basis by countries with actual nuclear weapons.

The question this war is really asking is not whether Iran survives.

The question is whether any country is allowed to survive on its own terms.

That question belongs to all of us.
