Six children have frozen to death in Gaza this winter, UNICEF says. More than 100 children have been killed since the ceasefire with Israel, as Tel Aviv continues to violate international law. With Gaza still denied basic humanitarian needs, warmth remains a luxury. For many children, it never arrived.

With Angelina Jolie’s visit to the Rafah border crossing highlighting the aid that is barred from entering Gaza because of the Israeli military blockade… it’s important to remember that this has been the situation for Gaza for over two years during this genocide.

I took this video on approach to the Rafah border in Feb 2024 where kilometres upon kilometres of aid trucks have been held up unnecessarily by the Israeli military. Many trucks would later have their goods expire, only to be dumped at the Egyptian side of the border never to enter Gaza.

It has also been a longstanding Israeli policy, since the illegal blockade on Gaza began in 2007, to limit food aid as a weapon of warfare against the entire population of Gaza, by making calculations of daily caloric intake needed to avoid malnutrition effectively putting the entire population of Gaza on a diet imposed by the Israeli military.

Food is a human right. The use of starvation as a weapon of war is a colonial tactic used time and time again, including on Indigenous Peoples in the settler colonial state of Canada. These practices must end. It’s a crime against our collective humanity.

Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza have died from the repercussions of malnutrition, their organs shutting down without proper sustenance. And reports state that of these starvation deaths 80% of them are children. While the situation has improved since its peak catastrophic levels this summer, food is still not accessible to all.

The Sameer Project distributes rice meals to entire camps that are not getting support from relief organizations. On November 25, we supplied 190 hot meals of rice at Al-Hayya street in Al-Hayya camp in Khan Younis. The total cost was $973 including commission at 9% for ingredients and 15% to withdraw cash for labor and transportation.
