Why I'm doing crypto in Africa?
Because of the sea of hidden talent on this continent.
The self-taught builders with anonymous accounts 🫡
The quiet ones in noisy TG groups who only speak when it matters 🫡
The curious minds who put everything on the line to learn and grow 🫡
In the years of talent-based work across magma, Borderless, and LAVA, @iamsonge keeps reminding me we haven't even scratched the surface in finding the hidden gems - those who don’t show up to conferences or those living out of the big 4 hubs.
So when hiring for new roles at @lavavc_ , the playbook in front of us was:
- Hire through referrals only
- CV dance (written by AI)
- Outsource legitimacy to universities or big-name companies
Sure, we could find great people that way. But limited to the ones who rise through the political economy of semi-closed networks.
What about the gems not in that dance party⁉️
So we flipped it. No CVs. No “show off about yourself." No "I know so-and-so, get me in the door”
Just: Show us how you think
I thought asking for real tasks would be "more work" (it is for us and the candidate) . But it's infinitely more interesting.
Reading submissions, I'm learning new things and challenging my own assumptions. Applicants are making us think deeper about well known problems.
And we’re finding people we never would have found through traditional channels.
This isn't just about hiring better.
It’s reaffirming my conviction that the continent is full of talent.
An open internet is one of the best platforms to unleash Africa’s infinite potential.
Talent is Africa’s precious gem 💎
We had an amazing time at the Machine Learning for Remote Sensing (ML4RS) Workshop during #ICLR2025!
Clinton Oduor and Jackline Tum presented our ongoing research on Self-Supervised Representation Learning on Remote Sensing Pixel Time Series with Patch-Based Masking — pushing the boundaries of AI for Earth observation.
A huge thanks to the #ML4RS and #ICLR communities for creating a platform to showcase our work — and for recognizing the importance of inclusive AI innovation.

🌍 At GITEX AFRICA 2025, our COO Muthoni Karubiu took the stage as part of a high-level panel to unpack what it will take for Africa to lead in AI innovation.
The discussion centered on the “three-legged stool” of AI: #data, #compute, and #talent — alongside the need for trusted datasets, aligned policies, and stronger collaboration across the continent.
Africa’s AI future must be built with local context, by and for the region.

"Access to data creates transparency, and transparency creates trust — and that’s what unlocks investment." — @KateKallot at #GAISAfrica2025
In Africa’s journey toward building scalable tech businesses, access to quality data is a foundational requirement. Without data, there’s no visibility. Without visibility, there’s no trust. And without trust, the capital doesn’t flow. 📊
If we want to build enduring, investable businesses across the continent, the answer isn’t just more funding—it’s better data infrastructure, governance, and collaboration.🚀

📑 New in AI Research: Open-Source #FoundationModel for Earth Science.
We’re excited to share our latest research blog on self-supervised pixel time-series modeling for #EarthObservation!
🌍 Our patch-based masking approach trains a lightweight (~600K params) Transformer to learn long-range temporal patterns from unlabelled satellite data, paving the way for foundation-scale #EOmodels.
Empirical results show that the learned representations can be applied to various downstream tasks including land-cover mapping and anomaly detection. Check out the blog, learn about our latest research, and test our experimental pre-trained model on #HuggingFace!
Let us know your feedback—plus, get a preview of our future directions, from scaling to continental-scale analysis to adding new sensor modalities.

Object-oriented programming is a programming paradigm that's based on objects and classes.
And what better way to learn about it than by building a project?
Here, @_Jayky teaches you key OOP concepts in Python while building an online banking system.

Don't forget that the reason we are raising money for injured victims from yesterday's protests is because we don't have functional public healthcare.
Money to fund hospitals and pay doctors is buying apartments in Dubai and Vacheron Constantin watches

LSK President @FaithOdhiambo8 is not mincing words today:
"Like all mothers whose children have been killed, injured, tortured or abducted in the hands of cops, I feel the pain of my countrymen...In a bid to raise extra KES 302B via Finance Bill 2024, blood must be shed... I congratulate you [Mr. President] because history will remember you as the President that had to kill his people to raise more money"
