On Thursday, the UK Supreme Court ruled that a local council should have considered Scope 3 emissions from burning oil from new wells — a landmark decision which could put future UK upstream oil and gas projects in question. https://t.co/0GLVlBdMwP
Two must-read articles by @ColinJCarlson: “Health impacts from #climatechange have been apparent for at least 20 years, but the climate crisis is still not treated like other global #publichealth emergencies.” https://t.co/MfkmcPYQgy
FAO's plan to eliminate #hunger while keeping #GlobalHeating in check makes some serious omissions, say SEI's @cleoverk & @Mlaz_SEI.
Their new comment in @NatureFoodJnl highlights the missed opportunities:

🚨 New Publication 🚨
In @NatureFoodJnl, my co-authors and I critique the methodological and substantive shortcomings of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) roadmap for achieving zero hunger without breaching the 1.5 °C threshold.

@bataille_chris Agree it's problematic to cast gas as worse than coal. Part is overreliance on 20yr GWP. Coal needs to decline faster, but gas needs to decline as well. Wasn't aware of successes in CO+NM, would love to read more. Nature piece, btw, found worst offender at 9%+ in NM Permian.
@bataille_chris Yes, but US has had methane reduction programs and the industry has made commitments for decades . EPA Gas Star program for O&G methane was founded in 1993. This and $B in lost value has made little diff. Yes, double down of CH4 control but don't count on it happening in time.
We are thrilled to welcome @edwardrcarr as our new US Centre Director! 🎉
With decades of impactful experience and a deep-seated drive to address urgent global challenges, Prof. Carr is set to lead SEI US into a transformative new era.

@SEIresearch@edwardrcarr It's an honor and privilege to pass the baton to you, Ed. Super excited to see what's next for an already amazing and talented crew at SEI US!
“There a shelf life, a due date, on #FossilFuels now. We’re at a point where we can envision transitioning away from fossil fuels.”
SEI's @mlaz_sei commenting in @NBCNews on the historic agreement at #COP28 to transition away from fossil fuels.

I don’t know if #COP28 will deliver something unprecedented on #FFPO… but I’ll always remember this moment when @susanamuhamad cites our 2023 #ProductionGap report’s findings to implore why the burning & extraction of fossil fuels must be urgently reduced to keep 1.5°C alive 🙏🏼
Lots of interest at #COP28 right now on Paris-aligned fossil fuel reduction pathways so thought I'd re-share three relevant publications I worked on this year:
1) @NatureComms paper analyzing 535 scenarios from the IPCC AR6.
2) 2023 #ProductionGap report
3) #10NewInsights
Our scale of #AnimalAgriculture is catastrophic to public health and planet.
A new @UNEP report featuring @SEIclimate researchers seeks to address this challenge by exploring novel and lab-grown #MeatAlternatives.

⛽ We face a stark reality: global #OilAndGas production must drop significantly to meet 1.5°C targets.
But major oil firms, like @Ecopetrol SA, are slow to diversify, risking 'carbon lock-in'. How can they adapt?

COP28 president is wrong – science clearly shows fossil fuels must go (and fast). Great explainer from @st_pye https://t.co/3PoQoWWC7p via @ConversationUK
🚨 Our 2023 #ProductionGap report is out 🚨
While I wish we had better news to share, I hope our report will be a call-to-action for governments to finally commit to phasing out the production & consumption of all #fossilfuels at #COP28 and beyond.
