Just in time for next week's UN Climate Ambition Summit & #NYCW, our new @NatureComms paper takes a deep-dive into what the #IPCC#AR6 scenario ensemble says about reducing fossil fuel production in line with a net-zero future. Some key takeaways 🧵 https://t.co/msNzEO1VZr
The age of fossil fuel is coming to an end.
The rise of renewable energy is irreversible.
On Tuesday, I will outline the key action areas required to turbocharge a renewables revolution that can deliver clean & affordable energy for all.

My appeal to negotiators & ministers at the #COP29 climate conference:
Soften hard lines.
Navigate a path through your differences.
Keep your eyes on the bigger picture.
Never forget that the future of humanity is at stake.
After travelling for 27 hours from the #G20 Summit in Rio, the UNSG is back in Baku, ready to do whatever he can to ensure #COP29 "delivers an ambitious & balanced package on all pending issues, with a new finance goal at its heart." We cannot fail. #NCQG https://t.co/hzebgnMNEt
I am asking #G20 leaders to instruct their ministers & negotiators to agree on a new ambitious climate finance goal at #COP29.
This climate conference must not fail.
We must succeed, build trust & incentivise the preparation of high ambition national climate plans next year.

Coordinated disinformation campaigns are impeding global progress on climate change.
At the #G20 Summit, Brazil, the @UN and @UNESCO launched the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change to strengthen research and support for urgent #ClimateAction.
We must speed-up the necessary just transition from fossil fuels to renewables.
Renewables deliver clean air, energy security & good jobs. And they are the cheapest source of electricity.
The end of the fossil fuel age is inevitable. Let’s make sure it does not come too late.
The 2024 @UNEP#Emissionsgap Report launched with a clear message:
No more hot air … please!
With a massive gap between rhetoric and reality countries draft new climate commitments. /1
📢 PUBLICATION ALERT!
In our @EnvSciTech article (https://t.co/ZsAGGsjHCa), we elucidate the complex effects of oil and gas end-use activity emissions on #AirQuality in #EasternUS where intensive use of #oilandgas products and large emissions of biogenic #isoprene co-occur (1/2)
I'm deeply concerned about the recent push by 18 African nations to seek $5 billion for a new fossil fuel project lender.
This is a critical moment for our continent. We are at the centre of the ongoing climate crisis. Africa cannot continue to be a platform where fossil fuel interests are advanced, while African communities suffer

If we cant keep warming to 1.5C, we can simply 'overshoot'. 🌍🔥🌡️🏹
The idea goes as follows: we temporarily exceed 1.5C before returning below it at a later stage.
In a new paper @Nature we show how overconfidence in our discussions hides the deep risks of such strategy. /1
The crucial paper from @howarth_cornell explaining why exporting LNG is at least as bad as exporting coal came out officially today

These findings were highlighted by Secretary-General @antonioguterres in his #UNGA79 opening speech to world leaders, along with a call to stop rewarding fossil fuel polluters to wreck our planet. #PollutersMustPay https://t.co/RhsIZ8Zh6u
The @IEA released one of the most important and consequential reports for 2024–25 during #NYCW, clearly demonstrating the risks & pitfalls of interpreting the #COP28#Para28 energy transition goals as a pick-and-mix menu rather than their full implementation to keep 1.5°C alive.
Tripling renewables & doubling energy efficiency – goals set at COP28 – would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 10 billion tones by 2030 versus the current path
This would get the world 2/3 of the way to an energy system aligned with the Paris Agreement → https://t.co/QWCKDFDptN
The report also spells out the 2035 emissions reduction targets different countries could consider in their new #NDCs due next year. Aligning national energy strategies — incl. fossil fuel production & consumption targets — with climate goal will be crucial for policy coherence.

How do we achieve the #COP28 goals of tripling renewables & doubling energy efficiency by 2030, and what does this mean for the next round of NDCs?
This is addressed in the @IEA's new report released at our 3rd High-Level Dialogue with @COP29_AZ: https://t.co/pkQgPlDW9e
