SQLite has a load of awesome features needed if you have lots of complex metadata: great! But too many people use it as a key-value store.

A relational database in a file is cool if you need the performance and features of SQL. But for our use-case, JSON is open and much better.

@ctitusbrown @cyrillerossant SQLite a step up from HDF5 (bigger community!) but still shares same problems (opacity, single implementation).
