In a deeply misogynistic society, groups of boys and men routinely bond over humiliating and exploiting women. And the victim is not only physically and emotionally traumatized following one of the most fundamental imaginable violations: They are likely to be doubted and undermined at every subsequent step of the process.
“As a professor at Cornell, I have had many, many victims in my office, confiding in me their experiences of sexual assault and harassment. Many didn’t even try to report them to the police or the university, and, for those who did, the experiences and the outcomes have rarely been positive,” writes Kate Manne.
In Jane Doe’s case, the district attorney did not bring any charges after relying on the investigation done by campus police; they didn’t even speak with the men involved. The district attorney just announced that they are reopening the case on the basis of new information contained in the civil lawsuit filed earlier this month, and in recognition of the fact that “it can take years of therapy and healing for victims of sexual assaults to fully process and understand what happened to them.”
We now know that the university’s processes ultimately left five of the seven students accused free to graduate. Meanwhile, Jane Doe dropped out of Cornell and was denied her request to get her tuition refunded so that she could transfer to a different college. “She hence faced more severe consequences than most of the men who she alleges gang-raped her. And rape can effectively be a punishment for the crime of being female,” writes Manne.

🔵 Follow-up | Gaza Government Media Office:
The number of journalists killed by the Israeli occupation since the beginning of the war on Gaza has risen to 263, following the killing of journalist Mohammed Abdul Aziz Al-Najjar, a media professional and presenter at the Holy Quran Radio.
We condemn the targeting and killing of Palestinian journalists and hold the occupation and the countries participating in the war responsible for these crimes.
We call on the international community and all institutions to take action to protect journalists, stop targeting them, and pursue those responsible for their killing before international courts.
