On Ashura, we commemorate the murder of Imam Hussain and the lessons it teaches in integrity, sacrifice, and service for a cause.
Standing up for justice isn't something we do simply when it's easy—integrity is about standing up for it when it's hard, or even impossible. Imagine the world we could have if we applied those lessons in our lives.
Ashura is a time of remembrance, sacrifice and reflection.
Today, on the 10th day of Muharram, we are reminded of Imam Hussain's unwavering commitment to truth and dignity. His timeless legacy reminds us of the enduring values of faith, service to one another, and the belief that justice is always worth fighting for.
Our City’s strength comes from the many faith traditions that shape it — and our shared struggle against injustice and oppression.
May we carry these values forward as we continue building a more just City for every New Yorker.
This is Darializa Avila Chevalier, she just won a seat in Congress in the NY-13 district inside New York City.
She announced that she is a revert to Islam, interestingly out of the four Muslims that have ever been elected to Congress, two have been reverts to Islam
Tallying up the costs of the Iran war
* Americans paid ~$60 billion more for gasoline and diesel since the conflict began as a result of higher prices, per Iran War Energy Cost Tracker from Brown University
* The military costs are ~$29 billion, per a top Pentagon official
* For U.S. taxpayers and consumers, the cost of the war is at least $132 billion, per Moody’s Analytics
* No estimate provided for the costs of human lives (3,000 Iranians, 26 Israelis, 13 members of U.S. military)
* A companion story in the Times showed airfares are up 28 percent year over year, per Kayak, with airlines raising prices seven times since February. (Don’t expect them to come down anytime soon.)
* The resulting inflation prevents the Fed from dropping rates, which would have stimulated housing and other key sectors of the economy.
Against these massive costs, one must ask, What were the benefits? We didn’t reduce the likelihood that Iran would develop a nuclear weapon. U.S. oil refineries realized a profit boost, as they tend to do in these crises.
Probably an obvious conclusion, the war was not only ill-conceived, but also badly fails a cost-benefit test.
"Americans have short memories and never seem to learn from history."
If you want to understand why Iran hasn't rolled over in the face of US & Israeli aggression & ongoing threats, you need to understand the *Iran-Iraq* war of the 1980s.
My explainer on it is here, for Zeteo:
"if you think AOC... is somehow less progressive, less moral, less worthy of your support than MTG; if you as a leftist think she is better than AOC in any way, then I think you need help."
My deep dive on AOC vs MTG, especially their records on Gaza & Israel. I bring receipts:
Abdul El-Sayed: “Donald Trump is not himself the disease of our politics, he’s just the worst symptom of the disease. The disease is the system that allows big corporations and billionaires, special interests like AIPAC to buy and sell politicians. They use their money to rig our system against us. It’s why we pay more for the stuff we gotta buy, get paid less for the work we do, and watch our tax dollars misappropriated to drop bombs on other people’s kids rather than to invest in our own”
It's not just Democrats.
Independents now have a negative view of Israel, sympathize more with Palestinians, and believe Israel committed genocide in Gaza.
Possibly relevant for those interested in winning general elections.
A recent poll found that 60% – including 3/4 of Democrats and 2/3 of independents – oppose the U.S. sending arms to Israel.
That is why today, I am forcing the Senate to vote on two Joint Resolutions of Disapproval - the only formal mechanism Congress has to block an arms sale.
Candace Owens to Trump: It seems like you can't put together a serious thought. People will not fight behind, beside, or for someone who is fundamentally disloyal. MAGA is no longer commanded by you. You belong to the Epstein class
Fukuyama: The United States has never been as isolated as it is today.
No sane European leader can believe backing America in Hormuz now would be reciprocated later by a Trumpist America.
There has never been a time when the US was less trusted by friends and rivals alike. 1/
He declares victories for wars he hasn’t won, for elections he hasn’t won.
He never grew up. Still a child with thin skin who hates losing but is fundamentally a loser.
ABSOLUTE BOMBSHELL on CNN: Donald Trump now has the worst net approval rating among independents of ANY president ever. He is literally polling 10 points worse than Richard Nixon right before he resigned. The American public has abandoned him entirely!
Distinguished UChicago Prof. John Mearsheimer on Pres. Trump:
“[Trump] understands that he is in a situation that's worse than the one that Lyndon Johnson was in [in Vietnam]... he's flailing around, and he's going from optimism to pessimism at 95 miles an hour.”
