@cselley I live in NB - Canada’s only official bilingual province - and the state of FSL education is abysmal. Even students in FI SINCE KINDERGARTEN cannot pass the French language test. Aside - they can’t pass the English literacy assessments either!

I skipped a grade, and was allowed to accelerate through high school science. Met all of the requirements for a diploma at the end of grade 11. Had a great social life and lots of friends. My husband is much, much more intelligent than me. His school wanted to accelerate him many , many times, and his parents always refused. He had a horrible time in school and could only relate to two friends, academically way underperformed because school was horrifically boring, and couldn’t get into his degree of choice (electrical engineering). The only meaningful academic experience/enrichment he received during grade 9-12 was admittance to a one-week gifted camp. He’s in his 40s and STILL resentful.

@TheChaosWeeber Would also argue that a lot of people don’t maintain their stuff! My next door neighbours are obviously dirt poor, but they still take 3x daily trips into town, and do not take care of a single thing they own. Anything they have that is nice is garbage within 6 months.

Last week I spent $14 on 3L of grass-fed organic milk for my kids. It was gone in 3 days, so we are now rationing daily allotments for them, because spending $30+ per milk is obscene. (And yes, I am aware that this is a “privileged” take, but I also think that ALL families should be able to buy the healthiest products possible and government policy prevents that).

@Smileyyeg Facts. I learned pretty quickly living in Toronto that if I was going somewhere and had to use either the bus or streetcar, and it was <5 km, it was always faster to just walk.

The trick is to get an in-demand education in a lucrative field, and then to continue to live like an impoverished student for the next 10 years. Never ever allow yourself any fun in life while you save money for a down payment on an overpriced builder-grade home straight out of 1993.
