Aura. We didnt appreciate Pope Francis enough.
During his 2024 visit to the Catholic University of Leuven, Pope Francis was subjected to a very public dressing down in a speech by Luc Sels, the rector of the college
Francis did not take it lying down, before his trip was over he had said 'abortion is murder', women should not try to be men and referred to abortion laws as 'murderous' and 'criminal'. He even called abortionists 'hitmen'.
Sels had asked Francis publicly if the church would be 'warmer' with women priests, criticised the church on sexuality issues and abuse. The criticism was completely unprecedented for a Catholic University to a pope, with Francis having made the visit to celebrate their 400th anniversary.
Francis was not drawn into an argument, but spent the remainder of his Belgian trip causing absolute havoc in the mainstream media, causing a worldwide meltdown
He visited their sister university UCLouvain the following day and decided to press the nuclear button in front of a hostile crowd, telling them:
'It is terrible when a woman wants to be a man: no, she is a woman, and this is “heavy” and important'
He then mentioned as female roles
'from marriage to motherhood, or from virginity to the service of others and the building up of the kingdom of God'
The speech caused a MELTDOWN among faculty, with the university releasing a statement criticising Francis for his views on femininity
He responded:
'That document was pre-made. It was written in the moment in which I spoke, which is not moral... To masculinise women is not human; it is not Christian.
An exaggerated feminism, which means that women become like chauvinists, does not work. One thing is chauvinism, that does not work; another is feminism, that does not work'
On the topic of abortion, Francis decided to go scorched earth, telling reporters that 'abortion is murder':
'Women. Women have the right to life: to their own lives and the lives of their children. Let us not forget to say this: abortion is murder. Science tells you that within a month of conception, all the organs are already there. A human being is killed. And doctors who engage in this are – permit me to say – hitmen. They are hitmen. This cannot be disputed. A human life is killed. Women have the right to protect life'
Francis announced at Mass during the visit that the beatification cause for King Baudouin had been opened, the king who abdicated rather than support abortion
After visiting his grave, Francis said the abortion laws were 'murderous' and 'criminal'
His intervention came as Belgium considered expanding abortion from 12-18 weeks
So outraged were the politicians, that the Apostolic Nuncio was summoned in the wake of the comments
The visit was the last multi day visit of Pope Francis outside Italy, but it us perhaps a glimpse into the environment that produced the video below
At this event in Ghent (Belgium) yesterday, someone asked me if I’m thinking of training more cartoonists to carry on with the work cartoonists are doing because Uganda ‘has very few cartoonists’. It’s something I keep thinking about and discussed with some fellow cartoonists but hitting snags at every attempt! It looks like Ugandan cartoonists just pop up and, at some point, they just disappear quietly. I just realised that this year I’ve made 20 years ever since I started drawing cartoons on public affairs! I don’t many more years to go. Perhaps Ogon the legend who still has much more energy will hold the fort longer.
I have seen a few young ones show up, only to disappear in about a year or two. The prominent Belgian cartoonist, Lactrr, who with whom we shared the panel told me that it’s not unique to Uganda. At 46, he says he is the youngest Belgian cartoonist!!! Others are in 70s … A lot of work to do. Because cartoons play a vital role in democracy, especially in speaking about what is ordinarily difficult/ risky to debate openly - thereby encouraging more people to speak too.
In 1294, the Catholic Church was in crisis. The College of Cardinals had been deadlocked for two years, unable to elect a new Pope.
Out of desperation, they did something radical. They didn't choose a cardinal or a diplomat. They chose Pietro da Morrone, an elderly hermit living in the mountains of Abruzzo.
Pietro was famous for his extreme asceticism. He wore hair shirts, fasted daily, and lived in a remote cell. When the messengers climbed the mountain to tell him he was now the most powerful man in Christendom, he tried to run away. He eventually accepted the duty, taking the name Celestine V.
It was a disaster.
Celestine was a saintly man, but he was completely illiterate in Latin and naive about the brutal politics of the Vatican. He was immediately manipulated by King Charles II of Naples, who essentially turned the Pope into a puppet.
Realizing he was destroying the Church through his own incompetence, Celestine did something no Pope had ever clearly done before. He asked the canon lawyers a simple question: "Can I quit?"
The lawyers, including Cardinal Benedetto Caetani, drafted a decree establishing the legal right of a Pope to abdicate.
On December 13, 1294 just five months after his election Celestine V read his resignation letter. He stripped off his papal robes, put on his old hermit’s tunic, and sat on the floor, hoping to return to his cave.
He never made it back to his quiet life.
His successor, the ruthless Boniface VIII (the same Cardinal Caetani who helped him resign), feared that Celestine’s supporters would try to reinstall him.
To prevent a schism, Boniface had the old man arrested. Celestine V died ten months later, imprisoned in the Castle of Fumone, a prisoner of the office he never wanted.
For centuries, Dante Alighieri’s description of him in The Inferno as the one who made "the Great Refusal" colored his legacy as a coward. However, modern history views him differently as a man of profound humility who recognized his limits. His decree on resignation remained on the books, unused for 700 years, until 2013, when Pope Benedict XVI used it to step down.

About this PhD debate:
1) Africa needs more not less PhDs, actually about 100k more in the next ten years by some estimates
2) Highly capacitated people are the engines that'll drive the continent's future. Those people need trainers, who in turn need trainers..PhD holders...
Cardinal Sarah posts Ratzinger photos today on the anniversary of his death.
I’ve recommended his books - particularly Introduction to Christianity. I will relay a brief anecdote. I was flying back to the USA at Christmas time. The TV in the back of the seat had Benedict’s homily on one of the channels. He spoke of the birth of Jesus, and the theology around it. That it means something that God comes down in vulnerable form. He is weak and needs trust and care - like people. That’s the point.
Just something that occurred to me as I keep seeing these Ratzinger tributes. The intellectual tradition is richer than its critics give it credit for - and way too good for the people trying to use it politically.

Pope Leo has consistently promoted Catholic moral theology. He has condemned abortion, affirmed marriage is only between a man and a woman, has rejected the notion of women ever serving in the clergy, and has openly said he does not believe in open borders and that nations have the right to control who comes into their countries. The notion that he's "woke" or a liberal is ridiculous. He is a thousand times more socially conservative than Donald Trump. But on top of that, he isnt a politician. The Pope has dedicated his entire life to Jesus Christ and the Church. He dedicated his life to missionary work, and is devoted to the Mass and the Eucharist. He has emphasized many times his priority is spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Pope Leo is a great man and I admire him deeply.
The priest who died on the Titanic to hear confessions.
Father Thomas Byles was offered a seat on a lifeboat twice. He refused both times to hear confessions and comfort the people onboard.
When the ship struck the iceberg, he gathered passengers on the rear deck.
Survivors reported that he stood amidst the chaos, hearing confessions, giving general absolution, and leading the Rosary until the water swallowed the stern.
Heroic❤️

A man trying to save his father & completely ignoring his wife & kid closest to him
The wife represents the present life, the son the future & the grandfather represents the past, which the man clings. Thus losing his present life and future

During my internship in Pediatrics - during rounds the Professor asked a question - I knew the answer while residents didn’t.
The Professor just said that it’s okay to have developmental regression during residency to the residents. The work pressure doesn’t allow much time for study. It was part taunt but part consolation that he understood their predicament (work vs study)
2y later - me as resident- same Professor- exact same situation- an intern answered - while we couldn’t .
Professor remembered and told me - Congrats Aditya - Your development regression is now complete :)
Two years! He remembered and the callback to the OG joke took two year! 😅
