THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE - AND THE BRAIN ANEURYSM THAT SIMPLY VANISHED
On April 8, 2011, millions of Catholics around the world were preparing for the beatification of Pope John Paul II.
In Costa Rica, one woman was preparing for something else.
She was preparing to die.
Floribeth Mora Díaz, a wife and mother, had suffered a catastrophic brain aneurysm. Doctors examined her condition and delivered devastating news.
There was little hope.
The damage was severe.
The risk of death was high.
Even if she survived, the future appeared uncertain.
Her family prayed.
Her friends prayed.
And Floribeth prayed.
On the night before the beatification of John Paul II, she watched the ceremony from her bed. Too weak to do much else, she turned to the newly beatified pope and asked for his intercession.
The next morning, something happened that no one expected.
She woke up feeling different.
The symptoms were gone.
The weakness had disappeared.
The suffering that had dominated her life was suddenly absent.
Medical examinations followed.
Doctors searched for evidence of the aneurysm and hemorrhage that had threatened her life.
What they found stunned them.
They found nothing.
No trace of the condition remained.
No gradual improvement.
No lengthy recovery.
No medical explanation sufficient to account for what had happened.
The hemorrhage that had endangered her life had simply vanished.
For the Church, this was not accepted blindly.
The case underwent years of investigation.
Medical experts reviewed the records.
Theologians examined the circumstances.
The Vatican studied the evidence.
Only after extensive scrutiny was the healing recognized as miraculous.
That miracle became the one officially attributed to the intercession of Blessed John Paul II.
And because of it, the Church proceeded with his canonization.
On April 27, 2014, Pope Francis declared John Paul II a saint of the Catholic Church.
Think about that for a moment.
A woman in Costa Rica prayed.
A dying brain aneurysm disappeared.
An investigation followed.
And a saint was proclaimed before the entire world.
Whether one sees this event through the eyes of medicine, faith, or both, one fact remains:
The healing of Floribeth Mora Díaz changed Church history.
Millions knew Saint John Paul II as the pope who helped transform the modern world.
Few know that a woman thousands of miles away played a decisive role in his path to canonization.
Perhaps the most remarkable part of this story is not that a miracle was claimed.
It is that the Church spent years trying to disprove it before accepting it.
Because Catholic miracles are not declared by emotion.
They are investigated.
Questioned.
Examined.
And only then recognized.
Today, Saint John Paul II is honored by Catholics across the globe.
Yet behind his canonization stands a mother from Costa Rica whose impossible healing continues to raise a question that medicine alone has never fully answered:
What truly happened on the morning Floribeth Mora Díaz woke up healed?
Saint John Paul II, pray for us.
If you believe God still works through the prayers of His saints, share this story and pray one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for those suffering from serious illness today.
And one question remains:
If this miracle had happened to someone you love, would you call it coincidence, medical mystery, or something more?
