There is a reason the American military budget is the one thing that never gets cut.

It is not because Americans are uniquely aggressive people.

It is because the military budget is where the shame goes.

Every failure of domestic governance, every unhoused veteran, every poisoned water supply, every school that cannot afford books, every child who goes hungry in the richest country on earth, every one of these failures requires an explanation that does not implicate the system.

War provides the explanation.

We cannot fund schools because we must fund the military. We cannot address the overdose crisis because we must address the security threat. We cannot protect children because the budget is consumed by protection of a different, more abstract, more politically useful kind.

The military budget is not a defense policy.

It is a deflection policy.

Every dollar that goes to a weapons system that will never be used is a dollar that does not have to address something that would require the powerful to be accountable to the powerless.

The aircraft carrier does not protect American children.
