Difference in Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk and Mortality by Dietary Pattern Analysis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the link between dietary patterns, derived using principal component analysis (PCA) and reduced rank regression (RRR), and gastrointestinal (GI) cancer risk and mortality. A total of 28 studies were reviewed, identifying "healthy" and "unhealthy" dietary patterns. The healthy pattern, marked by higher intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy, was associated with an 8% reduced GI cancer risk, while the unhealthy pattern, characterized by processed meats, alcohol, and sugary beverages, showed a 14% increased risk. PCA-derived healthy patterns also suggested a reduced risk of GI cancer mortality. However, RRR-derived unhealthy patterns showed no significant risk association, indicating further research is needed to clarify the differences between PCA and RRR findings.
