6:30am Wednesday: Looking ahead to our potential incoming weekend winter weather event. There remain tons of details to iron out, and precipitation types and amounts are impossible to nail down at this time range. However, the potential for a significant, disruptive winter weather event remains high for much of the region.

There has been a north trend in most of the modeling over the last 12-24 hours regarding the eventual track of the low. The further north it goes, the less snow there would be, instead favoring of sleet or freezing rain.

It is impossible to tell if the north trend seen recently on the modeling will continue. As the pieces of energy involved with the storm system get better sampled by upper air data and ingested into the modeling, that should become clearer over the next 48 hours.

As I type, I haven’t really changed my thinking from yesterday. Here’s the basic idea:

Precipitation will spread in Saturday and be at its heaviest Saturday night through Sunday.
A lot, if not all, of the precipitation will likely be of the wintry variety.
Amounts of precipitation look significant.
Plan for the possibility of power outages that last a few days as well as difficult to impossible travel conditions in many areas by Saturday night and Sunday, if current ideas hold.

This is downright concerning, and there is now enough model agreement to sound the alarm bells. A widespread swath of heavy snow is expected, with totals ranging from six inches to over a foot and a half across the Ohio Valley, the Deep South, and the Mid-Atlantic. This storm will be crippling, causing major impacts, and everyone needs to take this seriously.

Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, Charleston, WV, and much of the Mid-Atlantic coast are all in the bullseye for a CRIPPLING winter storm, and this is just the snow component. (Refer to my post this morning about crippling Ice potential south of the snow Line).

Some of these areas typically struggle with only a few inches of snow and could see over a foot. We are looking at one of the most significant winter storms in many, many years. The time to prepare is now but DO NOT panic!
